{Posted the other night about removing the old sidestand lug on my 71 Commando. It's done, lots of grinding...

sidestand questions

tacked the new lug on using OldBritts template but it looks to me like it's sticking out too straight?

sidestand questions

In this shot the frame rails are level at 8-1/4 inches above the bench

Seems to fold and operate OK, but I'd like to know its proper before final welding. This would be simple if the rear wheel was back on but..... This was a much easier job on my Triumph. Any comments/suggestions/hints greatly appreciated.

I found the template to be right on. The other clue is how well the bumper stop hits the frame when raised.

If you are right on with the template you are more than like good to go. You can wait if you feel you can get good beads laid down later. I welded mine up at every possible point.

Techniocally these are PROP STANDS .

You can see how much leverage the thing has, for tearing things up .
Tecnically you position the Machine so that when leant , the weight JUST comes on it.

RETRACTING it is about the first thing you do , before getting astride .
Just imsgine what a horse would think if that were bolted to its ribs .

 Savvey .

P.S. someof em haddem ( the mount ) up inside the frame loops behind the X tube .
The outside one gets in the way of P.R. pipes .And scrapes if one doesnt full ones dungerees first .

WIth all that length you can see why we get nervous when people kickstart their bikes on the side stand. So much leverage...

Thanks-understandable, when I got my 71 Bonneville it came with a 4X4 piece of wood to put under the sidestand. The lug on the frame was all but broken off and without the wood the L/H footpeg almost hit the ground. Best arrangement I saw was on a Enfield Constallation I once had. It was mounted on the back of the frame loop so you had to be off the bike to operate it. Still did'nt work for beans, but at least you did'nt run the risk of tearing up your frame.
