I have a 73 Commando 850 that I'd like to replace the side stand on. I have trouble with it not sticking out far enough to kick down after a ride. It's a bit tricky trying to find the side stand right next to the center stand and then getting your boot in there to find the side stand and drop it down to support the bike. Is there a simple bolt on replacement that would make it easier to see and drop down? Something that maybe sticks out farther so that it can be reached easier? My legs are short. Thanks.

I have very short legs as well , over time I have developed knack for getting my boot in there and getting the stand most of way out , sometimes it does snap back , mostly though it works , I really like this particular stand and decided long ago just going to keep at it as is ....

If there is any slop in the pivot bushing, the stand falls and retracts further under the frame.
Probably need a new bushing. Part #41A.
Haven't been able to find them in the States so far.
Getting close to placing an order for one and some other unavailable items.

Edit.... Or you can buy the whole new assembly...#40A
I just put the new assembly on my 850, works great.
My 750 needs the bushing.

It is common for folks to braze or weld a small diameter rod to the end of the sidestand, that sticks out far enough to get a boot on it and push the stand out from under the primary, frame, exhaust, etc. Somebody probably has a photo that will give you a sense of length, angle, etc.

I'm going to fit a bigger rubber bumper to the side stand in place of the stock one, just to space it out an extra 1/2" or so. Someone here mounted a rubber bumper to the frame rail to kick his side stand out a bit further.

When did the rubber bumpers start? My '72 does not have any. I get off the bike and then get the oily shoe finding the sidestand. Thought this was normal.

So Michael B, The whole new assembly you bought (40A), the kickstand is longer than stock? And you didn't need the rubber bushing?

added this to the frame - basically a loop clamp and an old muffler iso mount. pretty much worked OK, but had some movement over time. I've since added a second clamp, and a small piece of 3/4 inch angle about 2 inches long - pretty much eliminated the movement. positioning the bumper to bumper fix was more critical with the single rubber iso mount. old pic and food for thought - you'll get the idea. kicks out the side stand just enough that I can get my foot into it while sitting on the bike.
