Biggest change is getting rid of the heavy flywheel, transforms them.

Interesting. Did you replace the stock flywheel on the road bike as well, or just the race bike? And what flywheel did you replace it with?

The slide carbs must make a difference as well?

Does your handlebar-mounted master cylinder improve the front brake? Even with the optional second disc, the stock brake on mine is not that great with that nasty cable that operates the m/c under the tank.

The road bike is stock, I just accept it for what it is as I have other bikes, just did 700km this weekend 2 up, nice ride.
BMW went to a clutch carrier type flywheel/clutch in 1981 across the range. Easiest way is get a later flywheel assembly ( German Ebay is good) a post 81 gearbox and starter motor.
its a swap out conversion.
I converted mine from single to dual disc, RH leg is hard to find. Race bike did the same just got another l/h one and welded the tangs on the other side.
Keeping the 14mm M/c and dual discs works quite well. The single one is pretty poor, not quite 72 Combat poor but close.
Take an 81 on BMW for a spin, they are like chalk and cheese to the earlier ones.
I have an 83 R80ST ( semi GS with dual sport tyres) , great bikes, would be good for your Irish back roads, although I never got used to having tractors with spikes coming towards me or blokes playing bowls on the road. :D
I sold my 71 BSA Lightning in Cork in 2004, was a grand bike for the roads around Cork and Kerry.

The P.O. fitted the second disc on mine at God knows what cost! Still not great. I will keep the bike more or less stock, but I'm always interested in what other people are doing with their steeds.

Ten years on from when you sold your Beeza, the Irish back roads are still fun to ride, not too cop infested and trailies work well.

I wonder if or when old Beemers will start creeping up in price? At the moment, they are are very good value for what they are. Still want another Commando though...

mid to late 70's BMW's here are about 1/2 the price of a Commando. As time goes by I find the Commando gets used less and less..... and this is getting used more and more...

How much difference does the Supertrapp silencer make to performance?

After seeing speirmoors Moto Guzzi Tenni Green Griso, and not having had a modern bike for a few years, I decided to go and have a look at a Griso in the flesh, and I have to say it is probably one of the few modern bikes which I actually like the look of, and in my opinion which is stylish and which has a dual seat (there are lots of beautiful single seat bikes) which I wanted as my wife rides with me about 75% of the time. Up to now I really like it. 8)

Hi daveh,

In my opinion the Supertrapp makes a noticeable difference in the performance and character of the SRX. I rode with the stock silencer at first and noticed improved performance once I put the Supertrapp on. I started with 8 plates on the Supertrapp and then added 6 more plates = 14 total. No mods to the stock airbox needed and it has the stock carbs. Plus, the sound of the Supertrapp on this thumper is awesome! Highly recommended and it transformed my SRX.

Glad you like it Reggie. Actually my wife was the reason I got it also as the Norton is the the only other two seater bike I have.

Put about 10K miles per year on this. Over 50 on the clock now and still runs great. Longest day, 750 miles, Allegheny National Forest in Pa. to here.

Like to ride someplace neat, strip the bags off and burn tires for a few days before returning home. This was in Az. near 4 Corners last year.

Did the same thing on this for several years before a stray animal totalled it. (Shown here in The Badlands)

My 2004 BMW R1150RT.
Don't have a good side-view picture of it that I can find now, so this is a 99% identical one. Mine doesn't have an antena and I've added a pair of GS handlebar mirrors for additional rear-view safety.
I just love this guy's photo. Never seen a shot that does as much justice to the bike as this photo.

Here a pic of my Trident, that I restored several years ago.
A very different beast compared to the Commando,
The colour seems rather odd, but it is correct for the 1971-2 model.

Just bought this Honda CB500X ABS last week, works great so far on the local twisty yet mighty bumpy back roads...a COMPLETELY different bike than a Commando but the weight and power are sort of similar and it is also a parallel twin. Definitely a budget bike but should work even better for me after I install a better seat and some suspension improvements, quite OK as is....

I sold my RD400 to a chap in California and bought this:

It came with a set of Givi bags and I love it, I have done over 3,000 Km since I bought it in July. I run errands anytime I can and with the bags, I can carry much more than I ever could.

It is a 2009, had 23,000 Km on it when I got it, easy starter, very powerful for a 650, great suspension, superb brakes.

Wrecked the 12 three years ago and replaced it with a 14. Been all over on this without a hiccup. As was said previously, gotta have one bike you can jump on and ride anytime, anywhere.
