So, having been to my first 961 meet and seen a number of the beasts all in a herd, I also got to see, and hear short pipes and long pipes.

And now it’s even clearer to me that before that the shorties rule!

Following Richard with his shorties, on mine with shorties, with Ben and Stuart’s longies playing their part as backing musicians, sounded rather like what I imagine it would sound like inside the cockpit of a Lancaster bomber !

A proper motorbike noise !

Awesome. Did anyone have the decat with the long pipes. Short pipes on a long haul dose give that ringing in the ears at night.
Just asking.

Yes, a few lads have got the de cat and long open pipes. And yes, they are quite a bit quieter.

You’re right, ear plugs are perhaps a good idea on a long run with short pipes. I don’t tend to use them. Might have to re think that!

I started wearing ear plugs last year. I highly recommend it. On many occasions my ears were buzzing after an hourlong ride with my shorties.

Highly recommend!!

Should be compulsory in fact!

Sounds absolutely stunning on acceleration. And a wonderful burbling, popping and banging on the overrun.

Not too loud, close, but OK.

On my way home I made decision to use more of the available rev range before changing up. Not only does hard acceleration sound great but keep her in 4th on the twisties and just use the powerband and she sings :) I should also add that my 4k vibration 'issue' that I had running in has almost gone, is sweet between 4k and 5k.

It was frustrating not to be able to meet up this weekend - like most jobs my headlamp rebuild threw up lots more little issues to sort. Anyone like me can't resist improving parts as I go along.

I am keen to compare the lovely looking open longs with the stumpies and my not-quite-standard open longs. I think I have the perfect compromise of appearance and sound.

I normally prefer my Davida open face helmet but wore my flip front the other day and found that it blocked a lot of what has been perfectly described as the 'jack hammer' engine noise while passing through the great exhaust note. Based on this I will experiment with different some ear plugs.

I spent the morning out with the new shorties... mine are custom made, taking a Cone Engineering 19" long big mouth megaphone with 2" perf core and cutting and rewelding with the bend. I also have a decat. These are loud, but totally intoxicating. Not too loud on the highway at 4000rpm, and a great megaphone deceleration roar... The bike is a hooligan machine now - worthy of that muscle look.

I can't say enough of how the bike is transformed after the engine blueprinting, new remap, new Bosch sensors, coils and plug leads....ya hooo!

Nice one Bushman!!!.
I'm finding that with the decat and shorties bike is running a tad rich. No remap. Plugs are fouling a bit after say 1,000 km (600 miles) with idling becoming an issue. New plugs back to awesome. Waiting for the co2 sensor eliminators to see if that helps.

Remap is a must with shorties.
