Shipping Prohibitive $$$

I gave up sending or buying from Italy. Just across the border but unreliable in the extreme.
Tell me about it. The parts just sat in their post office and they couldn't be bothered to look for them. Took a lot of persistence and patience to get them back.

I recently took delivery of a CNW electric starter and a few extra bits, sent from the US to Canada. To Matt's credit, he offers US Postal Service delivery which was reasonable in price. Unlike some vendors who won't ship out of country, or if they do only use couriers with high shipping costs and outrageous brokerage fees. Matt identified the parts as vintage motorcycle, which meant no duties into Canada.
I expected to be hit with a Canada Post brokerage fee plus PST and HST taxes when I went to pick it up. Which would have worked out to about $450, at a minimum. Guess what? They just handed the large box to me and said have a nice day. Every once in a while you get lucky.

Recently purchased a pair of disc brake fork sliders off of eBay.

International Shipping was listed as USPS, but the vender sent via UPS (suspect he though he was doing me a favour).

The good news is the package is scheduled to arrive tomorrow in record time. Waiting to get dinged on brokerage fees though.

Is anyone working with other AN members to double- or triple-up the cost of shipping from, say, RGM for a combined order, then parsing that out via USPS once Stateside?

I am wanting a 3 and 4mm clutch plate set that totals around $20.00 with a shipping cost of $60.00 and that is not possible. It's like the supplier and client are slowly drifting apart by way of worldwide location, and that is a sad state of affairs.

It is the courier services that are the issue here. do not understand how AN & RGM refuse to send via postal service outside the UK. Have had excellent postal delivery from other UK vendors, for a fraction of what RGM/AN quote for shipping, usually DHL or FedEx.

Because the Royal Mail has held it's customers HOSTAGE, I waited 6 weeks for a kicker lever, before the "strike" (slowdown)
that is STILL going on

They privatised Royal Mail and have now paid out a few billion to shareholders. And a few million to the CEO. So the workers have decided to ask for their share. Usual story.

...so I got slaughtered for EXPRESS charges for a gear that used to ship quite reasonably.

Thatā€™s why local retailers exist.

Support the ones you still have whilst you still can !

Pretty sure FedEx & DHL offer ONLY expedited service to international shippers. Been that way a long time. (Something about flying slow/stall speed)
I've enjoyed Royal Mail inexpensive and not all that slow delivery from Yambits, Nova Racing, Z1 Spares, etc.
Hopefully, it comes back one day.

Thanks for all replies, reading through them and re-reading this original post I get the picture now. I will work with RGM first and throw a foldable kickstart in there as well (life is short).

In my defense I always used Old Britts down the street. Now, for the 3/4mm steel clutch plates I need, GregM and Matt at CNW - no luck nobody has these Stateside.

Fitting one additional standard plain plate will increase the stack height by the same as the 4mm plate (+2mm) and if you don't have a spare plain plate then one could probably be acquired closer to home for less expense but unless the clutch plates have had some wear (or running in a dry primary belt drive) then the 4mm plate could be overdoing it.

Hi to all, just following up on this thread. The advice to contact Anna directly is correct - she recommends to me to cancel the payment at the credit card step and then submit the order. She will then be in contact to arrange a different carrier (FedEx) and take your payment. Her reply to me was definitely a "Yeah, we know..." response. Thanks for everyone's comments on this topic.

Maybe, instead of pissing away money, on cartoons depicting silly shot....
and also pissing money away on developing software code to create auto generated e-mails to tell us absolutely nothing,
they could have spent it on expediency.

Don't forget the 'how did we do?' email that usually appears within a minute of said parcel being left in full public view.....

Just priced out a shipment from the UK for some Norton parts, around $80 worth, nothing large or heavy, $120 shipping only option offered was DHL, so need to expect another $20-30 tacked on for their "brokerage" fleecing.

Those are all USD dollar figures to Canada, so got to add another 25% exchange rate.

I cancelled my order.
I just ordered some parts for my triumph , from montys classic motorcycles , they have a few norton parts , freight was only 23 pound to NZ

Recent UK order shipped via DHL. 902 GBP + 112 GBP Shipping for 6.45 kg. All small parts - probably fits in a 10" x 10" x 6" box.

Just ordered some parts for my classic mini from a well known supplier in UK. Was expecting the typical courier only shipping options as they usually have, but low and behold there were two parcel post selections. Lowest was about 11 GBP vs 45 GBP for courier.

It seems they have recognized the demand for lower shipping costs and made the change. If only RGM, Andover Norton would do the same.

In a world where I can get all manner of gizmos from China shipped either free or for a couple of bucks, it's baffling how pricey it is from western countries.

I recently got parts from andover as the NZ suppliers of Norton parts didn't stock them ,approx 8 pound for parts, 24 pounds for shipping ........ As I understand it Andover use algorithms ( someone can correct me if I'm wrong ) to calculate the shipping cost, I wonder if this system is accurate enough to reflect the true cost of shipping ?
As Tornado mentioned, shipping Product from China is alot cheaper and is well tracked, and not overly slow either . ( although no Norton suppliers in China that I know of...šŸ˜‚ )

To be fair to the vendors, it must be very difficult to create an online system that accurately prices the shipping costs for every single combination of parts bought. I've bought several heavy parts in one order from Andover Norton and the shipping was the same as if I'd only bought a headlamp shell.

Then today I received two lower shock washers in an envelope and the postage was only a pound less.

The only way to be accurate is to weigh and size every parcel before pricing the shipping but then that couldn't possibly work with instant online ordering.
