Well you may have to some time so ... I needed 1 1/2 inches all sides around the crank in case of a drop.
So here is the center web.

No that is not the crank I am sending but the right size.

And because of the rules it all goes in a 12X16V12 box from Lowes .67

I really like the various sizes of rubbermaid tubs, drill and zip-tie the lids.

Adding that much wood will cost more in shipping, but definitley peace of mind!

How is it supported against side loads? That would be up and down in the picture. The 'THIS END UP' on boxes is a vague suggestion and if they see those finger slots in the box, they'll go for them.
 
Hopefully that box will be within a second box with packing mat'l between them.
 
Bob it is a tight fit in the main cut out. Then the cross pieces interlock into the main cut out and trap the crank ends were they are 3/4 DIA. just like the ply thickness. I would ship it in plain wood but the box is much cheaper so there you go.
