Here is a a copy of the factory service bulletin. I have used this method for many years with no issues. Aftermarket cables, spacers, etc. may make other modifcations necessary, but it has worked for me.
my cable was routed as outlined above and I have severe chaffing in several locations. the rub factor is or was so bad, that it wore a groove in the footpeg spacer as well as wear to the muffler bracket in a couple locations. in one spot, it wore through the cable's black sleeve and is starting to wear into the inner steel liner. now, I can't say for sure if my brake cable is the factory original, but my cable reroute behind the bracket appears to have less contact with the bracket(s). again, thanks for the service bulletin.
