Does any one have recomendations for what are the best type of shoes for the rear drum brakes and suggestions for making them work as good as possible. I will be using rearsets on a 73 850 and I seem to remember they turn the rear brake into a meer suggestion!! Can a decent brake shop turn the drum and match the shoes for a better fit?

Somebody else can hrlp yoy with linings. When you tighten up yor rear wheel spindle, press hard on the brake pedal as you are doing it up. This wil centralise the shoes.

There is no one better than Michael Morris (IMO) of http://www.vintagebrake.com/. Send him your complete brake and get back an excellent rear brake that is 10 times better than stock.

Your problem with rearsets is one of leverage. Compare the standard setup with any rearsets and you'll see. A rod conversion to go with the rearsets would probably be the answer. I think RGM do one.

I don't completly disagree, but I found the original pedal to long so that I had to lift my foot off the foot peg and stand on the pedal ,I modified a damaged orginal foot peg mounted the peg about were the brake pivot used to be and put the pedal pivot were the cable used to fit, the brake pedal I made has a longer pivot to cable length, my rear brake is still useless but I can apply brake pressure by using ankle, not having to lift my foot off the peg. There was a reasonable post on this some time ago and from what I gathered was that VINTAGE BRAKE fixed them so they worked well, it appeared they must use a better lining material.
