I might cop some flak for this suggestion!? (But Im used to that  )
How's about an avatar asterix* in color next to the name for those who are a financial contributor?
Or something to that effect???? Obviously it would have to be put in place by jerry

Hard for me to imagine 300 norton owners here at the same time. The forum is impressive though. Great community, Great bikes
Couldn't imagine the site being gone.

This is a very simple and likely effective idea. Regulars here would be reminded to hit the donate button. New comers would still have full access, and it would be up to them to decide if they wanted to be part of this community. Those without a badge could be reminded gently by others to get on with it or else beware that they may be given bad advice!

The information could be included in the welcome email that the board opperates through donations and explain the 'badge of honor" system.

I do not know what would be involved in setting this up or administrating it. Whether there were different levels or just one but with a minimum entry level would need to be determined. I would suggest a green ball icon if this were adopted, and if higher levels needed, maybe you could have two balls!

Worth thinking about (I think).

Thanks JimC and pony up cowboys. Head um up and move um out.

This cowgirl ponied up and hit that Donate button! I've certainly found the site very helpful over the years. I even found out about our local club through a forum member here. We were kind of the black sheep of the INOA chapters at the time and didn't even have a listing on their website. Relations are better now, I'm happy to say.

We walk a fine line here. Too little support and there goes the forum. Too much and Mr. Doe moves to Malibu, gets three babes and a cocaine habit and, well, there goes the forum.

Are you kidding? You forget that Jerry still owns a Norton. He couldn't afford the babes or the coke habit! He might have a sweet running Norton though.

Well I live near Malibu comparatively, have one gorgeous babe and have a vino habit. Does that count?

A membership fee seems a good idea to me or limited options make sense if you don't donate
For instance if you don't contribute you can't post or ask questions. Or limited questions like on the RAT forum

Or maybe a gauge on the page indicating where funds were at in relation to costs?

I have not donated yet as I feel a membership fee is imminent so if there is any update on how this is going it would be good to know
I like so many others would hate to lose this site

Hi Jed,

We are programming the members area now and it is a big deal. There will be extra features for VIP members and nothing will change for normal membership. After I get some sign-ups I am moving the site to a dedicated server,

Regards--Jerry

Well, I personally am looking forward to being a VIP member and making a financial contribution required for that.

This is just a truly great web site and a gathering of very experienced Norton owners all helping each other.

I have been on many motorcycle forums and the civility and mutual respect that we all show each other here is extraordinary.

THANKS JERRY

And thanks to all the great people who post here!

John

Yes, thanks Jerry. Was wondering if previous donations will count towards the VIP or will it be a totally new situation? Maybe that's too much to ask right now?

I'm all for an annual membership fee, however you want to structure it.

I also think that banner links/advertisements specific to Nortons/British motorcycles would be a very good thing; sort of "friends of Access Norton" because it would be easier for me to get to their sites.

Hi Dave,

I have donations received and am using them to pay my programmers at this point :) They are doing it on the side as they already work for me, so its kind of a fun thing, but I cannot expect the work for nothing. Every time we get busy with my company (which is often) we have to drop the accessnorton project and get back to it later. Once I go live with this we will get a server.

Will get there though sometime :)

Why not get vendors to help "sponsor" the site by purchasing banner ads like most forums do?
They profit from our business and the forum right now is basically free (mouth to mouth) advertising for them.
Here is a place (this forum) where their customer and potential customers find out about all things Commando. This forum is a great resource not only for us for information but for the vendors to discuss their products, services and other offerings (that they make a living from) One hand washes the other.
This forum so far has been a non commercial venue. Now that there is going to be a significant cost in it's running and maintenance, a little commercialism for the common good may not be such a bad thing. Jerry would be able to pick and choose which vendor could provide sponsorship, tho I would hate to see banner ads for thing totaly unrelated to the forums mission.

btw Jerry, did you get the note about me donating back my most improved winnings from last year back into the forum?

JD

Thanks

Happy Saturday :)

I wanted to say THANKS again to all who have donated. My Paypal account has just under $2000 in it now. We are going to work on the new VIP members area some more. The goal is not to have ads/banners. Members who have donated will get access to the VIP members area for a free set amount of time to help beta test (undecided how long).

VIP Members will at the least get these things:

1) Their own personal photo gallery. (needs about another 8 hours work to finish)
2) Full search capability (search will be turned off for non VIP members)
3) The ability to easily upload images to their post and host them here (needs programming)
4) A larger forum mail box where photos can be emailed too.
5) A VIP next to their log in name (needs programming)
6) Normal VIP membership will be between $50-$60 per a year (not sure if I am going to use PP or allow Credit Cards/Gateway. Will probably use Paypal to start, to keep it easier)
7) There will be a commercial membership where members get their own page and can advertise http://www.companyname.accessnorton.com

Other things will be added over time.
I will be securing the server after launching the members area. There are no timelines yet,

Cheers-Jerry

Thank you, Jerry.

Judging by the members response after your last request, if you need money for the forum you need only to ask.

Hope everything goes as planned.

That said, I can understand your need to have a steady funding source. If you were doing this all yourself, you could just wait, if funds are low, to improve the site. With a staff, you need steady funding.
