I was sure over the last couple of weeks I was going to sell my 961 as it can’t take pillions, I don’t use it very much, and i can’t keep everything I buy (got to fund something else this year)

But, I was up for the MOT annual test today, sun was shining, bike was amazing, seriously amazing. I met a few bike guys on the run and at the garage who loved the bike and were doing their best to convince me to keep it. Telling me it’s value is only going up (now that’s the kind of logic that could work here)

So i’m home again and the ride was just superb. Got my usual mix of thumbs up, kids and dads waving....plus these bikes are such an event to ride.

Has anyone sold and really regretted it? Yes, I could buy another but this is exactly the spec I wanted, it’s somewhat irreplaceable given the extras and lack of CR’s around, and if it goes , let’s be honest I need the money for other stuff so very unlikely to be replaced.

Go on team norton, tell me what to do. Please.

You gotta keep the bike, end off, sell other things instead,u will miss the buzz for sure & there certainly a 961 meet coming again soon ,these bikes need to ridden & not tucked away in heated sheds that never see the light of day,Norton have had there bikes bought by guys that can’t ride a bike & no intention ,makes no sense to me, you can even live on one kidney you know if your lacking cash on the hip.Mines a keeper ,and had my first real issue with it recently ( which I will write a thread about ) but not put me off at all,all resolved

Love that reply, thanks (interested in your issue too) Rest assured i’m all about the riding ( I neither have the space nor money for a museum lol) i’ve just been short of time. Got a keen 12 year old kid who wants to enjoy a bike with me, so either it’s a nice bike for that which will replace the 961, or keep this nice bike for me and use another cheaper bike for him to ride out on.

Could you replace the rear hump with the one which switches between rear seat and hump as per the anniversary models?
Might be cheaper than buying a second bike.

That said, check out this months issue of Bike magazine - “Dream bikes for naff all cash” 1997 VFR for 1500, 2005 Speed triple for 3000....

I asked the factory and they checked and said the rear frame and hump can’t be changed on mine. I was prepared to spend a couple of thou converting but it’s not an option unfortunately.

Seems strange, it is essentially the same bike and frame!
Check out the mag for some ideas then.

To make your 12year old get the bike bug he gotta feel safe & secure & the mrs has gotta be happy to ,when my kids were younger a bike with top box panniers was a good intro ,lean back & hold on to the pannier handles.
You can always part ex the 961 against a two seater, I pinched this caption of Norton Canada a while ago.

It’s a tough call, and one only you can decide really.

At times like this, most folk reply saying ‘don’t sell it’ and ‘you’ll regret it’ etc.

But the truth is that most of us can’t keep everything, and sometime we just ‘move on’.

Personally whenever I’ve been in that ‘should it stay or should I sell’ thought process it’s usually been because deep down inside I already knew it was time to sell. I can honestly say that I don’t recall actually regretting to sell anything I’ve sold.

At the end of the day... it’s only a motorbike...!

That is true, and i do have another norton so I won’t be leaving the club. Indeed if you look at how much norton branded clothes I own, I can’t afford to be without a norton or i’d be walking around naked!

I guess I was just musing as to the potential for the value to hold its own, and dare I say even appreciate. If this is a distinct possibility I could make the man maths work and like already said, sell other stuff. Where’s the bottom of the curve for a pimped up 961 CR, are we there or will it go south or north. Anyone got a crystal ball?

My crystal ball says that we are probably at the end of the line as far as the UK spec 961 goes but I don't think that we are necessarily sitting on appreciating assets, or should I say that I have yet to make any money out of selling any of my bikes. It's riding season, my 3 steeds have covered quite a few enjoyable miles between them but I have the 'itch' to part with two of them, so you are not alone in wanting something different... the grass is always greener lol

I have the same itch this year.
It happens.

I don't think there is much chance for a 961 Commando to appreciate in value, at least not in the short term, perhaps is 20-30 years.
The Dominator has much lower production numbers, and is a rare bird by comparison.
I can see them picking up value, especially if 961 production ends due to new Euro regs that the 961 can't meet.

With all the problems I've had with this bike, I'd love to dump it. However, I'd take a bath on it financially AND, currently, it's running fairly well with only a few quirks. Still being rare in these parts, I love the attention it garners and it is a blast to ride. I found an independent bike mechanic who is willing to take on the repairs as needed, but lack of dealerships in the states still makes it a bit of a pain in the ass. So.....at the moment, I'm enjoying it. It may pay for me to purchase a van or a pickup truck.

I thought EVERYONE had a pick up in the states?!

You seem to be going through the same motions as me...your story sounds very familiar and I am still unsure what to do with my domi naked

Two possibly going, you are brutal. The thruxton went before to make way for the guzzi and now its going along with what? you might enjoy the guzzi V7 special, two up seat, plenty of grunt and easy to ride, one on ebay as it happens.

Do I read this info right, that there are 108 961 cafe racers registered in the UK in total, with just 68 licenced for the road? Or is it 68 in total of which 40 are not licenced, meaning just 28 on the road?
