Hello,
I am an old Norton fan and ride a '74, and also rode just about every iteration of the Dreer bikes, from the VR880s to most of the prototypes. We ran a riding impression of a the "English" 961 in the magazine in 2010, written by a contributor, and he liked the bike. But we have been waiting years for machines in the US.

For a potential story, I'd like to hear from anybody in the US who has taken delivery of a new 961 or has made a deposit on one and can relate the experience they have had with Norton USA and/or their dealer.

I traded email with the importer this weekend and he stated bikes were through customs and hitting some California dealers.

Basically, I'd like the word from the ground, so to speak.

You are welcome to post your story here, but you can also send it to intake@cycleworld.com

Thanks,
Mark Hoyer

Are you looking for Cali only bikes or USA. My posts on here should give you a wealth of info. I have one of the 10 Usa bikes! See my "961 First Ride" thread from November!

My dad picked up his bike Friday Dec 13th 2013 in CANADA and in May 2014 rode it from Niagara Falls Canada to TEXAS USA. Now the bike has 5,000 miles.

We attended the NORTON CANADIAN LAUNCH EVENT BLACK TIE EVENT at the BRITISH CONSULS home in TORONTO last year where we met Stuart and he gave us a wealth of information regarding the bikes and break in procedures and reasons why the design is the way it is. Like the oil level going down into the engine so the bearing are well lubed when parked as these bike will probably do a lot of sitting around. Also, my dad has one of only two DUAL SEAT SE BIKES in CANADA and has both clip-ons and standard bars. He switches back and fourth depending on what he's doing with the bike. He made a removable custom luggage rack too. Could make an interesting read.

If this works PM me and I'll get you his contact info.

Ill have to let you know when i actually get mine running, I have 2, well, kinda, they are Norton 961 Motors but the rest is prototype Norton America bikes. You can buy the third and I think you should, be a staff machine to flog, and rebuild every few years in different variations, Im leaning towards a updated Production racer yellow Peril machine, others say they want to see a Fastback, or a Tourer based on the Mark 3.

I need the funds to finish my bikes, Stainless exhausts made by a local craftsman are not cheap, same with some of the other bits to get these on the road. Plus i have dyno tuning and testing coming up, So its fair to say i have "Material needs"

Dont you want a repeat of that cover that set an all time CW sales record? Tell you what, spring for the bike, and I'll throw in a model from "Model Mayhem" for the photo shoot, I imagine you have your own staff photogs, but if you want i have a great photographer or 3 up here who I have worked with in the past for Museum events and bike shows I have put on. One model is "Miss CJ" she appeared on a past cover of our museum newsletter (scroll thru back issues)
http://nwcarandcycle.com/ but the REALLY cool thing? She is a REAL Norton girl, no kidding, Her last name is really Norton! She was stoked when i gave her some Norton America swag,

Another OUTSTANDING local photographer here locally is http://pashaproductions.com/ One of PDXs super cool hipster chicks, plus she looks great in leather and togs riding around on her T25 Triumph warning, some of her portfolio above is NSFW, wont raise any eyebrows here in PDX but in some places might create some issues.

I also have contacted the former frame builder who owned C&J Frames, he is semi retired now but is willing to make a few more frames, and I have the materials he needs to replicate them, (He doesnt have the original jig anymore, but I do) You could configure it any way you want,

My motors have the earlier Falicone cranks, and I believe superior, Falicone and Norton parted ways for a number of reasons and the word around the campfire is that Norton went with an Asian supplier, but at this point thats just a rumour, long term will determine how the vendor parts stream works out.
Thats a tough business,,, managing a limited cash flow and dealing with vendors.

The biggest issue in my mind is one few people are discussing, and its not just Norton who is dealing with this but those petrol tanks?

This isnt a new problem, Buell dealt with this in their tuber frames with bubbling paint and graphics, they solved it with seperate tank covers and eventually fuel in the frames instead. But Ducati, MV Agusta, BMW, Triumph and the rest are all scrambling to address this prohlem. The market is dominated by Acerbis, all the major companies use them. And most of their products are great, However this Alcohol in the fuel business is eating tanks left and right.

Theres a Duc dealership in Texas thats addressing this on some of their models by replacing the affected tanks with new tanks that have been lined with a sealer but eventually all sealers seem to fail and the insight I heard from Business insiders is "Buy time till the warranty runs out" I called Evan Wilcox the other day and he told me he gets 2-3 calls a week on this topic, and has piles of failed tanks with Caswell in them, and he has a long waiting list for replacement tanks in alloy. At some point the major bike companies all are going to have to come up with a solution to this.

Be interesting what CW comes up with a future article about these bikes. And while you are at it, any chance you can talk to Indian/Polaris and tell them to come out with a "Sport Scout"?? Id buy one, the new indians are cool, but I already have a Laz-y-boy recliner in my living room, I dont need a leather and concho festooned one in my garage. Just like Big Twin HDs,, I have no use for them, I like Hot rodded Sportsters and Buells and own a multitude of them
Bring on the Sport Scout!

Come on up to the Norton rally and Ill bring the Oregon Beer, Theres a reason the Beer media/Press have declared Oregon to be "Beervana", Ill send you home with your own 961 to flog along with a case of Rogue brewings Dead guy Ale or McMennamins Terminator Stout. Dont forget the winner of the above auction gets 2 free passes to the rally.

You mean something along these lines? Check out the BOTT Kit;

or
http://www.bottpower.com/bott-xr1/

As for the electronics, thats pretty easy, I can supply that no problem as I am ordering them for my other bikes as well (Hence the sale) The electronics seem scary for some people but its not that complicated. Most of the parts for the new Nortons are off the shelf items from a variety of vendors that many motorcycle companies are also using. The reg/rectifier is industry standard, the senders for instruments are also off the shelf industry standard and theres a number of Speedo and Tachs that will plug and play to the Motors (note in the auction the wires and plugs are there) And i have contact with the company who was making Speedos and tachs for Norton America so you could get them with the logos, but i also have contact with 2 companies that make custom gauge faces for most any instrument out there. As for the ECM/ECU thats also super easy. You can go with what Norton UK is using.......
http://www.omextechnology.co.uk/
And those guys will sell you same unit Norton is using or a better unit, the tuning information is readily supported and theres also many forums where gurus will walk you thru it. These units are used on all kinds of machinery, so its not rocket science.
However my plan is to use a Megasquirt unit, American made, and about half the price, even better, theres a LOT of people using the software and hardware and TONS of resources out there. I also have several guys who have dynos and extensive tuning experience so I will be happy to share fuel maps and ignition tuning data as i set up baselines and alternative tuning specs as my exhaust systems wont be stock.
Im also learning this tech as well for myself, I have a number of Buells and 2 Ducatis and Have TunerPro, ECM Spy, Desktop Dynos and in contact with the
" The Tunerversity" Im an old school carb guy so this tune on a laptop biz is challenging but once you get into it its not that hard.

I also have tons and tons of support data and other materials from the guys who developed these Nortons to begin with.

As to the Bores? Thats a good question. Its been well documented that UK Norton had some issues with bores and oil consumption and it appears it was a limited number of bikes that were affected. I will look into this issue on these motors i have but I am quite confident that Menard, with their background in F1, stock car racing here in the US and Indy car as well knows what they are doing. The Bore/cylinder issues is well after Norton & Menard terminated their relationship.

supposedly, from Matt Capri the canadian units and american 2 seater unit ha e steel liners, the 961 se were to have the nikisil bores. the oiling problem that was occurring was due to the rings being swapped, not labeled properly, steel bores got nikisil rings, and visa versa. from what i have been told. problem is you won’t find it in print. England trying to cover their ass.... or so they say....

The bikes are usually shipped 10 at a time as that is what the container holds! The first shipment to the US was 10 bikes!

that would depend on the container size.. 40 45 or 53’ ??? anybody know what models will b coming over ??

The containers that Norton has been using hold 10 bikes, they haven't been switching sizes!

I put my deposit down on an SE in March of 2010, with South Bay Norton in Lomita, CA. I have been told my bike has just arrived on the boat and I expect to drive down next week (from SF Bay area) to pick it up.
Its been a long wait, but I expect it will be worth it.

GP cycles already has theirs prepped and running. open house at GP saturday . they got 2 bikes in.

As I understand it, there are two lists, one for carbon wheel bikes and one for wire wheel bikes. I believe I am #1 on the wire wheel list. I have been told my bike is in the shop now and will be available for me to pick up on Wednesday.

So I sounds like BPHORSEGUY has a bike, terrys was going to pick his up and GP Cycles had one prepped and running. Any more news I have missed?
Mark

yeah, south bay got 6 bikes total, all gone now. 3 w USD ohlins and 3 w std forks, 3 w carbon wheels , 3 w spokes. supposedly next month will see 6 more at SBNT
