Seat Straps

Some seats have straps, some do not. It doesn't even seem to be by year or style. But 40 years later it can be hard to tell. What the heck is that strap for anyway? So you can leave a note to the local cop not to give you a ticket? To place your expensive motorcycle gloves under so they will be there waiting for you when you get back? Anybody know the history on which models and why?

My yamaha has one, so far all it has been good for is holding dirt.

I always thought it was some US DOT requirement, like those grab bars behind the seat that people take off.

In France they were, are?, required by law for the passenger to hold on...
