What's the preferred sealant for joining Commando crankcases on reassembly?

Preferably something by Permatex that I can get at NAPA...

Every auto supply i called did not carry anaerobic sealants, including napa. What you can look for tho is loctite 518, hylomar, threebond 1194. if no one carries those then try your local bike shop which should carry yama-honda-suzukibond. Also try your local bearing supply house OR industrial supply house which would carry loctite 518.

Try someplace that repairs european cars, if you can't find it in a autoparts store. Locktite 574 works well on crankcases. Hylomar can be hard to find, it was also packaged for Jaguar in a bigger tube. The Three bond products work fine as well. Yamabond 4, is the same as Three bond 1104.

+1 for Yamabond #4.

It is a non-hardening/slow hardening sealant that gives you the time you need to get your motor built, and when you install it and crank down on the engine plate fasteners and front ISO bolts you will still have some flexibility left to enhance the sealing qualities.

I purchased mine at the local Yamaha/Triumph/Kawasaki/Polaris/SeaDo dealership; I'm sure that you have one near by, especially if you live in Connecticut; it doesn't get much more civilized in the US...

just a note, all of the "bond" products that are produced come from the company threebond. so if anyone is partial to one brand they're all the same thing...

Years ago I tried both permatex and silicone sealer on the cases. The Permatex worked but I was too slow putting it together one time and had a miserable time cleaning it back off. I seem to recall the silcone sealer working but there was the risk of it getting inside.
The last time I used one of the bond products and it worked great.

Wellseal. Can't get it at NAPA though!!

I agree with tpeever. Wellseal is the real thing. I get it through ebay. One tube lasts very long and it's not that expensive as long as it really does the job.
