Attend any bike meet, looks like way ahead is phone mount for mobile with waterproof cover or have it in your jacket coupled with bluetooth earpiece / scala type device. Maybe not not as good to use for local amenities, but this method seems popular.
I also believe that any nav aid that is capable of speed camera warning / detection even if that part of the system is switched off in France is illegal. Hopefully our French members may know more on this.

Am I correct in believing that I wire positive (red on the zumo) to earth on the Norton (+ ve), and
wire power (white on the Norton then it will be switched) to the black (formerly earth) on the Zumo, and therefore keep positives together and negatives together?

Yep, can be done, do include the original fuse (5 amp?) in the new power lead (black for the zumo) however.

just couldn't resist this one. why would you not want to get lost when out on your Norton???

You've never done three laps of the Paris Périphérique then ? :roll:

Signposting in western Europe is so cynically managed to take all traffic onto the motorways that it's very difficult to navigate with them anymore

Sorry to drag this to the surface again, but not being an electrician, I would just like to confirm something before I switch the power on to my Zumo 550, and blow it up :? .
The Zumo 550 comes wired for negative earth and has a black cable for this, and a "red" positive power supply wire, which is fused.
My Norton remains positive earth.
Now I understand that my sat nav unit is fully insulated in its holder, and so should not be affected by the +ve and - tve earth issues and can also be charged by the bike .

Therefore,

Correct. I have mine wired through the ignition switch and it senses when power is applied. It turns on automatically with the key, and when I stop it'll ask if I want to continue on battery power. I discovered recently that a low battery will fool the Zumo into thinking I turned off ignition... kinda annoying until I figured out what was going on.

Running on battery is handy when stopping for fuel, you don't have to wait for reboot. I use the fuel gage function to track the day's miles.

Thanks Slimslow slider, I have done it!
When wiring a Zumo 550 to a +ve earth Norton, the wires go to the following;

Zumo black to power source on the Norton.
Zumo red to earth (usually red) on Norton.

I'm sure that this will be so obvious to many on here, but it wasn't to me, so I am recording it for others who are as dim :idea: as me. :lol: :lol: :lol:
