OK, I drove by some water today, saltwater no less...... Big mistake!!! Now my brake rotor/disc is getting rusty. What can be done to prevent this? Really looks like crap...... One caveat, with the new brake pads she sure as hell stops better!!! Much better brake feel also.

Steve try movin' inland away from this salty water problem you speak of. I put silver paint to any part of the disc the pads don't touch ,seems to work.

One of the negatives of skimming or grinding the plating off brake rotors is that while the new uplated steel surface brakes better, it will rust . It usually will clear off with the first hard use of the front brake. As Torontonian points out, painting any area that the pad doesn't sweep will keep the rest of the disc neat.

By the way, that MkV 750 is looking good!

Steve,

Re your photo's of your long time bike. I love the blue fire flake, sweeet! I can recommend using rustkill on the disc surface, this neutralises the rust and does not seem to affect braking performance. I use the type of rust preventer that is used o beare metal panels etc. Just dabb some on a rag and rub it over, when you pack her away, after getting caught in the rain or near salt etc.
I noticed your oil cooler on your bike, I don't want to sound like an no it all, or anything, but I would be worried about blocking off cooling to the exhaust valves and head where you have it located. Otherwise mate I could bo fault your bike, beautiful.

Regards Rich

Yes, I am aware of the oil cooler being too close to the head, and have that on my list of things to do in the very near future, Like one day after work this week. I will look for the Rust KIll near me.

I sprayed over the disc friction area once thinking the pads would wear it off, first junction I came to, brakes went on and didn't come off again. Paint had melted and glued up the pads and locked up the front - felt pretty stupid
