If you remember from this thread poor Jeff has a slight addiction to Nortons. Well, instead of helping him with a cure I think I may have enabled him. He needed to sell of one of his projects and needed a likely victim, preferably with a similar (and probably more severe case) of Nortonitis.

These are some pictures of the project that he had.

Not pretty at all. But we aren't a group full of common sense, now are we?

When Jeff decided to sell it I was beaten by one of our more illustrious members. I don't know how he jumped on it first, I suspect either ninja abilities... or cheating.

When he backed out (I say chickened) when a client wanted a different model I had a chance. Luckily Jeff was driving down to Daytona and would deliver the bike to North Carolina.

About an hour ago my brother met him and picked the bike up. Boy, it's pretty ugly in the daylight.

It looks like this bike will send several sandblaster's kids to college.

The good news is that it's a guaranteed winner for Best Improved whenever it gets restored.

My brother has a small collection of parts that we've gather over the years. Stuff like oil tanks and Z plates. There is plenty of time to keep collecting the needed parts as he has started an A65 project.

you named this thread right. it has plenty of rust and will need a lot of gold to make it nice

It might be a little premature to order spindle clamps from you.

And so it begins again. Another resurrection waiting to happen. Best of luck with it!

I'm more squeemish about the timing cover screws

Heat and an impact driver and they will come right out. Aluminum and steel will separate. Steel on steel? Maybe.

More pics.

First the good news:

Rusty Gold!

Combat head. But we assumed that.

Rusty Gold!

Sidestand still works.

Rusty Gold!

Tach probably doesn't.

The not-so-good:

Rusty Gold!

Sprakplug broken off. Probably kept any water that didn't make it down the carbs, out of the cylinders.

Rusty Gold!

As we saw, bent frame. Heat and some swearing and it should come straight.

Rusty Gold!

Not sure if this will straighten as nicely.

Rusty Gold!

Not sure how off this is, need to check after the rest is sorted.

I've, sadly, seen worse. If anyone is feeling some pity and wants to donate some parts they will be put to good use in a caring home.

Speaking of rusty bits, I have been using some stuff called "Freeze Off" and am really impressed with it. It has penetrating oil along with a chilling agent. Spraying it on freezes the part which helps break the bond between the parts and allows the oil to penetrate better.

I'm thinking that it took a pretty good amount of force to bend that how it did.

I'm no expert, but looking at that, I'm thinking what happend to this bike happened to me back in '86...an "endo" (end-over-end) crash.

You may want to update your tetanus shot first

Those nuts holding on the barrel is making me squeamish.

50/50 ratio of Acetone and Dextron II transmission oil is a great oil to penetrate stubborn rusty attachments.
Or you could soak it in Kerosene or Diesel oil by giving the motor the big dunk for a weekend.
The backbone looks straight and the rear seat loop should be no problem to straighten with a little heat from a blowtorch.
Looks like a great project ...so get on with it.
Cheers,

Headlamp shell tatty but thank God that the pilot lamps rubber buckets are intact! :)

Great looking project there Swoosh. I am looking forward to your detailed project pictures. So what color are you thinking for this one?

Cheers,
Gatsby

Congratulations Dave & Bro
Now that's a great project to have your own "Tech Day" with.
I'll bring the hacksaw!

I'm not sure if it will be more painful hearing about this one or actually doing the work. I'd throw a stick of dynamite under it and run like hell.

It takes true love to love something this ugly.
