I am fitting oil gauge to bike and have done spindle mod to allow oil to both sides of the head and remove the need for the crossover feed. Embarresed to say i stuffed up and drilled all the spindles, ( i kept wondering how the oil could get across the exhaust side of the head.) Only when i looked to start putting it back together did i relise that it wasnt needed
Question 1 Should it matter they are drilled, Tight fit into the head at end should block the new hole anyway or should i maybe block it with a washer type gasket where it fits on the inside end
Question 2 I know and have read flat sides of spindle face front/front and rear/rear but how come when you look in the rocker itself the oil hole is opposite from the flat side if fitted as per F/F R/R. How does the oil end up in the cup and ball
Question 3 To get the push rod seated with the rocker on the intake side seems impossible I cant see it let alone get my fingers or nything in there Do i do it from the exhaust (front side) and then fit the exhaust rockers. which i have to do anyway since i pulled them for no apparent reason.

Thanks in advance for the answers, I ,m not really embarressed , i,m sure i will do worse before i finish :D

Yes you will need to work from the exhaust side.

By the book, from the exhaust side, with a flashlight.

Stand by a nuke plant for a couple of hours so maybe you can grow an extra set of hands, that would help a lot...

Thanks for confirming my questions guys, i can move on with assembly with confidence now. As always the promptness and depth of knowledge of the replies delights me, it's like having a personal supervisor over my shoulder in the workshop, Another question if i may, since i have not touched the head, once i reset the rockers do i need to take it for a run to warm it up and then reset them the book suggests or is that only necessary if the head was off and needed re torking .it makes a difference how i seal them when fitting thats all.

The modification is to allow for the removal of the cross over oil feed line to the LHS of the head. Why? In my case it is part of my fitting an oil pressure gauge. It require drilling the rest of way thru the INTAKE side rocker spindles which then allows the oil to flow between the two chambers ,There are quite a few posts about this try searching the forums for rockers thats how i got them

I understood the why, in my case, it would be only to use a single oil line and not use a crossover oil line (tidier). I tried a google search but did not find anything. I will search the posts.

Thanks

Jean you can do this to get down to one oil line with just a fitting on each end. So an oil line from the pump to the head on the timing side of the bike. Yes, just the intake rocker shafts need the 1/8 hole completed through . Braking the case hardening with a carbide #3 center drill and than using 1/8 cobalt bits and regular 1/8 bits. Note that a Cobalt bit will snap in soft metal very easily.
Now you would use the single banjo and it's bolt and washers from the primary side on the timing side and block off the primary side with a 5/16-22 bolt that is short as to not block off the oil flow just under the surface at that location. I use a (BSA part # 21-6050) and shorten it to 3/8's long from a 1/2 inch. Use a softened copper washer for a seal.
If you need to check your oil pressure just fit up the double banjo and use the second barbed fitting to supply the gauge. Still keeping the primary side blocked off.
I make a 1/4 thick aluminum holder that uses a small 100lb oil filled gauge. PM me if you need pictures.
