Hello everyone,

I am in the process of respray my YELLOW '70 Commando, and the side covers whould also have the "Roadster" decal.
I am buying all other decals from Andover Norton in Vinyl, as they told me these are better quality.
The problem is that I cannot find any "Roadster" decal in plain black colour, neither in Vinyl nor in transfer/dryfix.

A company called Classic Transfers told me they can create it for me, but they need the exact size, font size, font type.....

Questions:
1) Do you know where I can source one?
2) If not, do you have a scan of this decal, or its dimensions?
3) can you confirm I can clear-coat Vinyl decals?

Thanks guys,

lo zio from Italy.

There are at least several owners of the Type R here, so hopefully they can steer you in the right direction.

If you can find a bigger version of this pic,
may be able to scale the decal from the relative sizes of each.

No idea on clearcoating vinyl, that depends on the type of vinyl and clearcoat ?
Perhaps ask for a scrap offcut of vinyl, and ask your painter to try it first ?

Listen mate, don't use vinyl. It is rather thick and wont feather out with application of clear coat. Also if you don't clear coat it, the stuff will come of the tank when you spill petrol on it. I used it and now its come off the rhs of the tank. I didn't know it was vinyl when I bought it 20 years ago.

How long have Nortons been using vinyl stickers on the tank and sidecover logos. ?
The stickers on my 850 Mk 1 were vinyl from new, back in the 1970s.

I used vinyl motifs sprayed over with 2 pack clear coat on my mates Honda tank several years ago and it still looks fine.

I reckon that vinyls are more resistent to sun etc.
Decals I currently have (I guess not Vinyl ones) are broken by the sun...

The problem here is that I cannot find a plain BLACK "Roadster" decal, beither vinyl nor other material.
any suggestion?

Try RGM they list one but by the looks it is an Andover product but maybe your vinyl guys can work off it for you.

The ClassicTransfer guys are asking me whether it should be 113 mm x 11 mm (4.45 x 0.43 inches)
or 135 mm x 11 mm (5 1/2" x 7/16")

The one with Gold Outline from RGM measures 135x11 (the second size).

Is anyone owning a 70 Commando willing to measure it? :D

I would appreciate this a lot.

Thanks,
Alfredo

In the advertising pic above, it looks like 'Roadster" is the same length as 'Commando'.

If RGM have Andover ones, it sounds like they are available....

Rohan my understanding is that RGM has that one with gold outline. I need a solid black one (unless I am mistaken).

I wonder how I am the only one having this issue. Did nobody ever respray a yellow Commando? :)

I make Norton graphics, I have this one......send me your email I will send an image to see if you like it, they are based on original artwork, I think around 6.25" LONG.

That length is the whole logo, not just ROADSTER Mine are in 3M vynil & can be clearcoated. A better way is to use a mask and spray the image then clearcoat, lasts longer looks better no ridges.....or spray the area black then apply a paint mask version of the artwork then spray the yellow and clearcoat. I could supply it that way also. Depends on whether you are a purist or not?

Anyway, I am starting to doubt that the "Roadster" decal was in plain black.
Does anyone know if it was plain black or with gold outline on a yellow paintscheme???

thanks

Here is another link that shows black roadster decals maybe you've tried it already.

I only see golden Roadster here

There was a plain black Roadster one used on the early Commandos like yours. I got one for my '72 (when it was yellow) for a short time until it fell off. The older decals were very thin and had a clear backing (not die cut) and after a while you could see a layer of dirt or wax around the outline.
