Anyone know of a good place to get a replacement? In removing my rear wheel today, we found that my rim lock is pretty much worthless. The post is bent to hell and the pad on the inside of the tire isn't so great, either.

OldBritts notes it as part 017060, I believe, but doesn't say it's available.

Any ideas?

Unless you plan on running low air pressure for dirt racing you can simply discard the rimlock. Put a piece of tape over the hole from the inside and enjoy the better balance. Jim

Blew out on an interstate N.Y. because of a rusty old rimlock chafing on the tube ,blew at 55 mph with girlfriend screaming ! -to a hairy stopping and 8 miles to next exit. Amsterdam cycle told me the same ,a piece of tape under hole is much safer. The original use was to prevent tire creeping/moving on rim and shearing off of valve stem, a neccessary component of tire-tube inflation.

Modern tires run higher air pressure than those old K81s so no more rim locks!

Greetings,
I pulled those things out and junked them first chance I got. To fill the hole I got a 5/16 bolt of the correct length and ground the head to fit the hollow in the rim. Now it just looks like its there and tire changes are a little bit easier

I've been known to put some pretty good strain on my rear tire at times, and do not use rim locks on any of my bikes.

It's heavier than a boat anchor anyway.

I love seeing the recommendations to pitch the rim lock, since I already have.

As a matter of curiousity, my Combat had two rim locks on the rear wheel. I was rather astounded by this. Has anybody else seen this? The wheel appears to be stock in every manner. My recently aquired 850 has just the one on its stock rim.

Ho Ho Ho-ping you have a good holiday,
Russ

My dad's Nortumph, which uses a front and rear wheel from a '71 Commando, I believe, has two rim locks on the rear wheel as you have mentioned.

If you really really need/want one you can goto britishonly.com and do a search for 017060.....that is if you really really want/need one.

Are you going hill climbing? Chopped knobby? Chains?

From the sound of it, it may not be something I need. I just know the one I had is trashed.

Excellent link, thanks! I've never heard of that site before.. :)

Rim locks are and have been both my bane and my savior. Riding out a full blow out flat is one thing, riding out a de-rimming tire is way worst. Never want it again as don't expect I could ride one down again and even that one took me across oncoming lane to prevent the hi side at 55 mph. I am both pleased and in shock that so many report removing them. it does make me wonder if those w/o them got killed off so we can't get their experience. Drag bikes need them so do dirt bikes on soft aired tires. My P!! had 3 on rear. Tubless solution was pointed out to me on this forum and one is on its way now.
