It was a thing with some road model Rickman bikes, seen on Rickman BSAs also...

Around 1972, one of these used to park in front of Morrie's on Eddy Street in Ithaca, NY. Always loved the neutral finder lever.

It's fine as long as you use schedule 80 for header pipes.

I owned this one four or five decades ago. It was a lovely bike to ride, except for the gearbox, which was really clunky. I bought it with the intention of putting a Commando engine and gearbox in, but realized it was a fairly rare bike, so sold it off to a collector instead.
