The rev counter drive can be modified to take a proper oil seal.

UK? I thought he was in Deal, New Jersey, USA!!

t11's IP address is in the UK? (Deal is in the county of Kent)

So, please could members give their location details, - especially which country they live in, so that we all know approximately where they are, as it does help to avoid this sort of confusion.

I have the drawings and dimensions for the seal machining and upgrade.

I will try to get a account with photobucket and post it.
or PM me and I will attach and send it to you.All dimensions are in inches and a US part number for the seal.

A side story is I had a oil weep between the head and barrell that I could not identify and after I fixed the tacho drive it disappeared?

I think the oil was coming up the tacho drive cable head sheild to the bend were it goes thru the frame up to the tacho and at speed flinging oil onto the head/barrell!

Cheers

re oil leak

many thanks for all your reply's, it seems you have the answer...cheers

What we used to do, before these seal conversions were available, was to put an extra O ring in, with an extra gasket or two, so that there was a slight resistance with it all bolted up.
I have'nt had a leak from mine for at least 20 years like this.

Send it off to them and they'll mill it for $20. What they let me do was I just ordered a modified one, installed it and then sent my old one back for a credit, total cost being the $20. That way there's no downtime, though that may not be an issue at this point in the year depending on your location.

If you decide to modify the tacho housing and fit a proper oil seal (which I had done over twenty years ago) grease the upper part of the tacho drive gear spindle and lower part of the tacho cable with high temp grease.

Last time I removed my tacho drive housing I could hardly turn the tacho drive gear by hand due to lack of lubrication. That's when I greased it with high temp grease.

The standard 'o' ring job allows a bit of engine oil to lube this part, but not so when you fit a proper oil seal

Skoti is spot on. Unfortunately, I found out the hard way.

I also did the tach drive mod years ago. No leaks, no problems, until one very hot day on the highway. Heard a strange squeeking sound as I got off the exit ramp. What the...??? After letting the bike cool off and not finding the source of the sound, I decided FIDO.

Long story short: The next day on my return trip, the tach drive gear seized in the housing. This stripped the teeth off the tach drive gear, and chipped the worm drive gears on the cam. Ugh. Costly repair.

Pack the housing with grease (above the seal) each spring if you do this modification.

Just a quick note - OldBritts does not do the o-ring modification any longer. I called a couple of weeks ago to get mine done and was informed of this (although it hasn't yet been removed from their site).

Someone else from Deal with a leaky tacho! Have we met out and about? There can't be many Commandos in Deal!

There used to be a Honda (!) seal (forgot the part#) that could be used along with drilling out the housing from the underside. I did mine years ago and no leak since.

Honda P/N 91207-286-000
Hope this helps.Comes out of a Honda 450

I use a double O ring on both my bikes and don't have much of a problem. LUCKILY BOT BIKE WEEP VERY SLIGHTLY. The seal mod is wrong as proved above. The seal mod should have the seal at the cable end of the shaft to allow the engine oil to get to the shaft.

Which is where I put mine. $0.97 and no leak!
