Jim, I don't know you but I know a former pres of the Norton owners club who does and he says you are "one of the smartest guys I ever met."

As he and I discussed Commandos today n San Miguel de Allende over beers we found we agreed one one thing...you could make some good money developing/selling a good retrofit E-start for pre '75s. This, IMO, would be an immediate big seller to almost every "old guy" (which means LOT of us) with a pre 75 bike. The Alton starter looks like a good product but it's looking more and more to us like vaporware as far as having a product to actually sell. The Old Britts unit looks like an excellent and well engineered item as well but since it requires conversion to belt drive as part of the deal, plus a correspondingly higher price, it will have less universal appeal.

I think the market for Estart on a Commando will far exceed the market for pistons/rods/fuel injection, etc. So...Get started on Estart! There are two of us right now that will be in line for it. :)

I am working on it. Jim

And thanks Art.

OK Jim, I'd missed them on the market. DynoDave has spent some quality time with me and my stuff last decade so more aware of him. I meet him face/face at '04 INOA rally where he made me jump back in a start when he touched off his electric starter he had for sale. Don't know if the infamous sprag gear thingy is solved yet.
I shun electric kicker myself, if one kick will do it w/o injury.

I saw a picture of and really like the idea of mounting a starter where the magneto used to live. Someone make this happen for a REASONABLE price, and the Norton world will beat a path to your door.

Yes that would be the slickest placement but cam drive ain't set up for such loads so may take re-engineering of whole TS case and cover, which means lots more money and time. I like to see how its figured out but want none of it myself.

The system I am working on mounts where the mag was. It drives a redesigned set of gears that also eliminates the cam chain. It uses a very small PM starter motor. It will be a while before it is available as I have a few other projects to finish up first. Jim

How many irons do you figure you have in the fire Jim? Some of these guys may not last that long. LOL. Just kiddin, Keep up the great work.

If your neat starter kit could also be switched to generate some wattage then I'd buy two of em and ready to put down a deposit today to dream of gear whine cam drive too boot!

Hello JIm,

When the kit is available will it include the gear driven cam pieces, or will they be sold separately?

Bill.

Bill, JIm's starter adaptation is made possible because of his cam gear drive robustness. I'm restless after his announcement of whats on his mind as would
centeralize mass off crank end, allow thumb button starts, stabilize ignition timing and charge battery and fill up-cover up the blanked off unfinished area. Don't know it the starter could take continuous charging drive though. But an electric motor can usually be made to pump out more power than it delivers as a motor. So doubling of crank end wattage would not be impossible to get too.

Most jet aircraft use a starter/generator. I love the idea of a 2 in one unit, less hassel and weight. And with today's technology, easily obtained.

Its pretty ancient dual use, many windmill builders do it regularly. The main issue is the cute compact starters for generators OR Alternators to motors is the solid state plug in terminals that would have to be removed and scabbed on to place switching box terminals externally. Then would have to have battery enough for the starting punch. Some Brit bikes plus many others had dual function from factory, but they were planned that way, not afterwards adapted hassle. SRM technology is a possible new age charger/motor to look into. I think F! cars are an example of SRM to re-coop energy then dump it back to road for significant assist to the combustion power.

And with today's technology, easily obtained.
Hear that Jim, easily obtained ....we're waiting (sigh)

The Reality Of It:
I think we need a donation button for Jim too along side Jerry's at the top of the page so we could help finance his R&D efforts. and No, I didn't say R&R.

Bill,
The cam drive gears will be done first. The design for that is done with the thought of a starter to come.

The sprag clutch is the tough part of the starter drive. The sprag that is an easy fit is not robust enough and the larger unit is going to require some more work to get it in there. Jim

Less talk, more work! You're spending too much time on this dang website instead of in the shop sorting out the E-start, where you belong!

JUST KIDDING, Jim! :) :)

Yes dear.

Just a little gas on the fire,

They have a section of redily available and affortable 12v starter/generators.

and a general wiring, middle diagram.

Golf carts seem to be the main source along with larger lawn tractors.

I really would like to figure this out, I have my bike completly apart, and would like to have it back together in the spring.
