My ID plate is a bare metal plate with the year and number for my bike stamped on it. Obviously the red background and all other information has gone away (where?) I would love to replace this with one of the many new plates that are available. I would guess that getting it stamped would be simple but what about getting the old one off? There is the issue of how to do it as well as a legal issue. In California having an altered V.I.N. number is a crime. Has anyone lookid into this issue?

What does altered mean? If you use the same number as the original, you have not altered it in my book. I wouldn't worry about it too much as long as you don't use a bogus number and you have the title with the correct number on it. Norvil will stamp it for you if you send your old one in, but you can buy unstamped ones lots of places. The rivets can be drilled or cut out, new one purchased and new rivets installed and it will look like new. Old Britts has them for about $10. What about the engine and trans number, is the state going to call you on that too?

You might want to keep the original plate with the title.

All good info thanks Dave. I'm not worried about the legal side of things as much as just being able to get the old plate off.

I removed mine by gently grinding the rivet heads off and tapping through to the inside the with a thin pin punch. You could drill new holes if needed. Over here the rivets are called drive screws and if you ask for rivets they give you a puzzled look. They come in a range of sizes, have a spiral grip on the shaft and can be bought through nut and bolt suppliers. Use aluminium or brass to drive them in.
