Has anyone had any luck removing and replacing the mirror glass from a mirror , saving the original ss body?

I've removed the mirror and replaced the same mirror as that is the only way to tighten the pitch yaw adjustment. This was an aftermarket copy where the D shaped bolt hole rounded off and just spun. If you need to replace the glass, I don't know where or how to get one cut to shape.

I think I can find someone to cut some mirror glass, just wondering how to extract the old without wrecking the body.

I found a thin replacement vinyl mirror sheet at an auto supply that I cut and pasted over the original mirrors. It is not noticeable unless you point it out.

Pry the glass AND plastic border from the metal cup. Knife blade on the bottom (out of sight)

Just took 3 apart, but not without breaking glass. One was already broken and the other two were useless as mirrors. I got one out in 3 big chunks to use as a pattern. The backside of the mirrors had a sheet of copper which wrapped around the edges of the glass and make it more fiddly than it would be to pry the glass out. I saved the 3 copper sheets but need to get some glasses made. Shells appear to be stainless.

PS no rubber edge gasket in the three I have.

PSS copper was stuck around the edge of the back with a bead of some sort of glue. Glass comes out first, then the copper can be peeled out.

I used a tiny flatblade screwdriver and a utility knife blade. If you find someone who can cut the mirror glasses, I'm in for 3. Multiples should cut the cost slightly.

Took one apart last night, the body is made of ss sheet stamped into shape. A copper sheet is placed around the glass to keep the ss from cracking the glass when the ss body edge is crimped over( guessing about the copper) There was some adhesive or sealing putty in between the glass and copper also. Broke the glass trying to get it out. It seems a person would have to uncrimp the edge, then recrimp it during reassembly , which would involve fabricating some tooling, I suppose.

Replacement 'Viewmaster' mirror glasses are available (either flat or convex) from the original manufacturer (TEX Automotive).

I think that without the adhesive, the old glass might have come out intact. Two qs? I noticed the replacement glass comes with a rubber gasket. Is it the same glass as the one wrapped in copper? And are there any US distributors or do I need to order from the UK supplier?

Hopefully new glass would pop into the frame with some careful persuasion.

The"rubber gasket" is actually a plastic trim and not intended for these 'older' mirrors.

I bought the convex version (M97702Q) as I don't particularly like flat glass rear view mirrors so it has a slight curvature but will still fit by the looks of it.

And are there any US distributors....?

I couldn't find any on the Internet. Edit: I just found this: https://www.gbcarparts.com/proddetail.asp?prod=MI-RG001-LR

It looks almost exactly the same shape as the original glass and would almost drop in without too much persuasion without the copper backing but I have yet to try one.

That's a great find, Les!
Especially glad to find a source in the US.

I made a de-crimping tool......

...and could've got the glass out in one piece if it hadn't been glued in......

...but, yes, the new glass fits.
