Hi All,
I have reassembled my MKIII with new pistons, +020 barrels and a beautifully redone cylinder head with Kibblewhite components done at a quality shop. The original springs were retained. Adjuster screws were replaced. My impression is that I have a sharper valve train acoustic signature. It runs great and clearances are adjusted, etc. I have a theory that with less slop in the guides and junk on the seats that the valve train sounds are more focused. Or maybe bronze guides or stainless valves have a different sound than cast iron or steel , respectively ? Have any of you had this impression?
Sincerely,
Kara

Quality shop name ? I use Kibbles on my RH 10 850 head with Black Diamond valves. Don't know if they are stainless but could be a harder steel. Hopefully they were cut and ground in the seats properly by said shop.

Make sure the rocker arms are nice and loose on the shafts. I had one in that was noisy, and it turned out the a couple of the rockers were binding on the shafts, and created noise with the pushrods slapping the rockers to move them.

The original springs were retained

Why?

Unless you recently replaced them? Springs are not expensive and do wear out. I hope that you, at least, had them tested for the correct tension at specified compression distance.

I apologize if I have rained on your parade, but hope that the springs aren't factory original; I see this as false economy. I certainly wish you the best results and miles of smiles.

Your noise: There are many possibilities for a different sound, but none worth worrying about, if, as mentioned above, the rocker to rocker shafts have the proper fit. If the shop didn't replace or reassemble with part number 06-7845, insulating washers, under the bottom spring retaining cups that could cause the noise difference, would be my best guess; whether or not that creates an issue is beyond my expertise, I am aware that removing those washers from the Combat intake valve train eliminated the coil bind issue that were born with...Other will know better.

Best.

A long shot but as it's a Mk3 check the timing chain isn't slack.

You didn't omit the fibre washers under the valve spring cups by any chance?

Hi All,
The work on the cyl head was done by Dan Baisley at Baisley Performance, Portland OR, who I would highly recommend. Springs were tested--stack heights tested and fibre washers installed. I do not think there is an issue, I was just trying to see if others had a similar impression.
Sincerely,
Kara

Considering the number of times and places that metal strikes metal or moves against in the valve train, I would expect changes could well alter the acoustics, though that noisy exhaust may mask it. But as long as it's the sound of mechanical harmony rather than a harbinger of doom, then all's well and good, no?
Bad sounds usually get louder or higher, then it all goes quiet (or bang!)
Enjoy the music :) (and leave it in your slipstream..)
