Red white & red paint job

Well, following on from my last POST I hope the photobucket thing worked, here is a shot of my new paint job. On Maylars recommendation I got stuck into the wet & dry to remove a small amount of orange peel and some dust spec's. And followed up with a buff.

Cheers Richard

VERY nice, indeed!

I have thoughts of one day buying a spare tank & set of sidecovers for my Mark III and doing them up in those colors.

Sharp.

Wow. Very pretty.

It looks very nice indeed. Now follows the nerve-racking tapping in of the hinge pin. I hate that on a new tank, even with everything covered in padding. Small hammers and new paint don't mix !

Thanx guys, all that time spent preping the banged up steel tank was worth it. It was hard to get a complimentary cooment from the wife, she just had a quick look and said, how come the repair job on the bonnet of my car was not up to that standard. I guess I should take that as a positiive?
Ive got a new chrome tank cap to fit, I put htis job in a similar catagory to install circlips in the small ends, I feel better after it is done and it all wnet smoothly.

If my wife said that I'd tell her that "my girlfriend gets better jewelry than you too, what's you point?"

Richard,
very nice job on the tri color scheme.
Hard paint job to do right.
I would once the paint is cured use some blue painters tape around the fill neck where the roll pin
gets pressed in just in case you have a stray blow or punch glances off pin.
I'd lube the pin slightly as its only friction fit and try to cheat it in gently
A plastic mallet and a nylon punch could reduce damages if either got away from you
It looks really cool

Came out really well, better than mine! Only thing I should have said was not to paint the filler neck, just clear it up to the surface. I aways had fuel sealing problems with paint so I now leave the seal surface bare. Methinks it's time for a new paint job this winter, having cut and shut the fairing to get better cosmetics and fit that needs re-doing. Found some old green flake left over from my 72 chop, probably not enough to do the whole bike.

Looks good ! I concur with Keith1069 . I would remove all paint from the filler neck area . Fuel fumes will weaken it and seep under the other paint causing it to blister . Had that happen to a Sportster tank I had painted 20 years ago . I caught it early and was able to save the tank by installing a chrome ring ( called a paintsaver) with epoxy that acted as a barrier between the fumes and the rest of the paint on the tank . Wouldn't work on a Norton tank with its raised filler neck .

Gday Stockie1, one very nice paint job and those colors look brilliant! But I cant help think about the use of a transfer over an uneven surface, maybe a painted/stencil of Norton logo, and rubbed back could have eliminated that slight bubble?
Geez, I hope that doesnt sound harsh, but Im only trying to be constructive and always in pursuit of options for the best, one can do. The paint job is great and I take my hat off to you, but, I feel its not complimented by that transfer. :?
Could the trans be removed, paint rubbed back to apply clear then rubbed back again for flat surface for transfer then clear again. Im no expert but just curious and wanting learn from those who know! Let the FLAK begin!

Foxy,

No problem with your spotting the little ridge on the sticker, believe it or not it can hardly be seen by the naked eye, I think the camera with flash accentuates it. But regarding your ideas of clearing first to try and level out the paint joins, yeah you could, but after all the masking and mucking around with this scheme, I was glad to just get the clear on, and be done with it.

Cheers Richard
