Hi all,

I am in the process of more updating and minor re-configuring of my '71 commando. I am going for a more cafe style without any frame mods. The idea being that I could always go back stock. In an effort to shed weight for added power without engine work for now, I am getting rid of any unnecessary parts. Battery box and Z plates are first to go. Now I need to redo the custom rearsets I originally made to mount to the Z plates so they mount to the frame directly. My question is to any member out there who has a footpeg setup without Z-plates, How have yall done it? Pictures would be much appreciated. I am looking for inspiration on how to do my own.

Thanks,

John

hi, i dispensed with the z plates on a cafe style bike by mounting tarozzi universal rearsets on 10mm plates using the existing mounting points on the frame.

What are you going to hang the exhaust from?

I haven't fully decided what exhaust I am going with, thinking a short reverse megaphone possibly. Either way I won't be using stock peashooters and can fabricate a mount however I decide to mount the rearsets.

Hi

Go over Ludwigs post
Possible the most sublime road bike I have seen. After a while you realise that nothing is standard even though you thought it was at first glance. :D
Welded lug on frame for the footrest mount. Clean, simple, done.

all the best Chris

Would that be the N15 or something else I have failed to find?
thanks,
John

Look for the older posts.

Ha Ludwig :D :D :D

As I said the more you look, the more you can see its been altered. When I get to do mine I will weld 2 lugs & use an alloy plate to mount my footpegs on.
High level pipe fitted. Belt primary but I will look at clearance for the brake pedal. All invaluable knowledge, thank you Ludwig.

all the best Chris

Chris , thanks for the compliment , but it is not that simple .
Welding the footrest supports directly to the frame has a few consequences :
LH : you also have to reduce the whith of the primary chaincase with at least 1 inch , or your foot will be in a really arkward position .
So you can no longer use the so typical Commando outer cover , And you need a custom made brake pedal . Interference with the swingarm is also an issue .
RH : no room for a gear linkage , so you need a custom made gear pedal , reversing an original is no good , because it will stick out too far . If you want the gearshift in the correct position for your foot , you also need to reforge a kickstart to make it slimmer and closer in to avoid interference with the gear pedal .
But then it will hit the mufflers when kicking , so these need to be mounted directly to the engine craddle (Z-plates are gone anyway ..) to bring them closer to the frame . This means modifying the engine craddle and fabricating supports : easy RH , but LH has to clear the chain .. Bringing the exhausts closer to the frame rails means custom made header pipes , with the flanges tack welded in situ , our you'll never get them right . While you are at it , take the oportunity to make ligher , smaller peashooters .( originals look too big with 18" wheels anyway ..) Bringing the pipes closer to the frame also means that the LH one will touch the side stand bolt , so you'll have to solve that too ..etc .. So yes , you end up by modifying everything . My frame alone deviates from STD at 28 different points , beginning with removing the no longer used fixing points for the Z- plates ..
If you want to do it right ,the welded 'lugs' in itself aren't that simple either .
So I think it is only feasable if it is part of a total concept ,starting from a bare frame , with a clear goal in mind .
Not a simple add on in an afternoon ..

Ludwig, what is the weight of your Commando after all these sensible mods?

off topic , but.. when I first built it in this configuration it was 130 -131 kg .
But some things like thinwall headers , hollow kick , fender support .. where not strong enough , plus a few add ons .. so it gained a few kg over the years . Now it is around 135 kg . Next season new shocks ( Wilbers ) will add another kg ..

Not bad Ludwig, not bad at all !
Sorry Jnstrong for going slightly off topic.

John I appoligise if I am going of topic but I am wondering if anyone has tried to mount a set of standard rearsets (without the big loop) and used one of those folding kickstart levers to get the lever by it? Like the first picture in this thread of your bike Peter but using the Norton Z plates?

I doubt jnstrong wants to go that way ?

I am always up for a good challenge! Is there a good reason you can't solve many of the issues derived from welded on foot peg lugs with a spacer, one that would return the foot peg rearer the postion with Z plates?

As to going off topic, No one has. The mods I was dreaming up are all in the spirit of weight reduction. So keep em coming.
