I've been thinking about upgrading my 30 yr old Girlings to something a little more current and wonder what others have experianced with brands like Hagon, Ikon etc. I seem to remember seeing an ad recently for vintage bike shocks from either worksperformance or progressive suspension. looking for something that will provide a little softer ride than the girlings.

+1 ask for IKON 7610-1348 full adjustable shocks
 
I am very pleased with the Hagons.
Definite improvement over the Girlings. A good selection of finishes.
And not nearly as expensive as Ikons.
 
+1 Hagons. Good quality for the money.
Ikons look great at twice the cost.
NJB shocks I tried rubbed the chain guard due to spring pre-load adjuster position.

Of course pretty much any decent new shock will be miles better than 40 year old Girlings.

Not only twice the cost, Ikons have besides usual adjustable spring preload also easy adjustable damping and are completely rebuildable. You get what you pay for :!:
 
I have the black spring Hagons ... much better than original and I like the looks ... no comparison to the Ohlins on the Ducati though ... but I think I paid $190 to my door ... so very happy with them ... not sure cost on other brands

Very true. They look top notch. I'd love a set of Ikon's but I have many mouths to feed.
If I raced it or owned fewer bikes I'd probably be able to justify the high cost.
Just curious, Have you ever rebuilt your set of Ikons? What is the cost?
 
I was under the impression the 7610 ikon's are similar to the Koni dial-a-rides and interfere with the chain guard on a Commando. Any clearance issues with the Hagons, either slim or wide springs?
 
Here's a shot of mine with a wideline spring next to a CNW fender. It barely makes contact with the lower collar. Sorry the pic isn't too great. I don't have the old fender anymore or I'd snap a pic of that for reference.

tomtietjen, Ikon 7610-1348 does not interfere with the chain guard as the adjustable spring seat locates higher on the shock compared to the original Commando KONI shock or Hagon shock.

mschmitz57, no I never had to rebuild my Ikon shocks in 15 years of racing. However I ditched a set of Hagons after 1 season as most of the damping was gone but that was 20 years ago and I assume Hagon produces better shocks nowadays :wink:

I have stainless steel Hagons on my mk2a 1974 850cc nothing touches where it shouldn't with stock chainguard.
 
I fitted Koni 7610 about 30 years ago, I had to cut a window in the chain guard to allow the damper body to have clearance. Dial a ride Koni shocks are bigger again than the 7610. Falcon rear suspension units (UK) get a good review but are more expensive
 
I've got Falcons and like them a lot. Very well made. Really light too. Excellent ride. Yes, they were more expensive than many, cheaper than Maxtons though !

I have the springs pre loaded a little and they clear the chain guard nicely.
 
Just got a price from the ikon dist, $460.00 for a set of 4610's vs $194 for the Hagons. Are they 2 1/2 times better?

2 1/2 times better? Depends on what you expect of shocks. 2 1/2 times more durable? At least :!:

I have rebuilt my old 38 year old Koni shocks which are the same as Ikons, the kit cost $55 from Ikon and was easy to rebuild, this was the first time I ever rebuilt them in this time and have many long miles on them, I brought a set of Ikons for my Slimline Featherbed and they are the same as my Koni shockes with top damper adjuster and bottom spring adjuster, I brought direct from Ikon here in Australia and are very good to deal with.

You do get what you pay for and a set of Ikons will last a life time, not to many shocks on the market these days can be rebuilt, after I rebuilt my old Konis, they work even better when they were new as I put 10w oil in them, better than the 5w from new.

Yes they are worth every cent, rebuildable and you will never buy shockes ever again, I brought a pair of Hagons when my old Koni s blew a seal and while I was rebuilding them, didn't like the Hagons at all and was glade to get my Konis back on, Ikons are the new Konis.
