I see what I think I want on Kenny Cumminings yearly race winner.
Shift rod goes under not over, to allow the gear pointer to
be used plus neat foot lever angle adjustment.

Where would one source a set?

This one?

Rear sets under rod shiter?

Make one?

Rocket Science for Peel's Rear Sets?
Duh I'm merely along for the dream ride, not a creative machinist.

I'm stuck now with looking at pegs and mounts in HD catalog to
try to adapt or call cortch rocket rear set makers for
a reversed pair : (

I really want-need to be able to verify what gear I'm in at times,
as that tiny shinny pointer has saved skin a few times.

They will get struck and slid on, so 1/2" shafts wanted though
the toughest signature structure on a Commando, its Z plates.
I can check with Kenny but I don't think a kicker can be
fit with the normal or nay under shot rod shifter.

I may have to get a reversed gearbox cam to flip shifter
and still retain leaned over shifting up reflexes.

It probably want work with a kick starter (not the he doesn't have one). You note that all the commonly available rearset shift levers have the big sweeping arc up over the kick starter. On the other hand, if your rearsets are mounted far enough back, as Kenny's appear to be. They may be behind the arc of kickstarter.

In fact, that photo is from Roebling Road this year, and that bike belongs to my buddy John Magyar. He let me have a go with it while my new motor was being built. It is very similar to mine, but is a Short Stroke motor. Wow, it's a nice bike.

John uses a crossover linkage with his TT Industries box, so the rod comes from the top, down to the underside of the box, retaining the 1-up/5-down shift pattern. I sprang for the GP drum that TT Industries supplies so my linkage doesn't need to crossover to get the GP shift pattern. I use a straight rod that runs from below the peg, horizontally across to the shift shaft. I will take a photo today and post.

And... the BEAUTIFUL Barleycorn rearsets I use do have a folding peg option (I don't use folding pegs), so a rocket scientist could make all this work with a kick-start, no problem.

Thanks for the tutorial Kenny, this is mostly new ground to me,
shift patterns to other item clearances.

Glad there's dudes like you and John draining resources
constantly for a go at that trickles down to us earthlings.

Barleycorn brand is new name to me.
I gave Rich Stone Peel's nice vintage ones, d/t mass of
steel and need to adapt LH to work a Yahma's R1 master cylinder.

Do yours ever get in the way of leans?
Is there anything that ever gets in the ways of your leans?
Does anyone even bother racing with you on the track any more?

Advantage? Well duh It sure looks faster don't it!

My reason though is because Ms Peel is a
Watt's like tri-Helm rod linked isolastic Commando,
underpowered to spin rear tire at will in any gear yet,
so she can tolerate crashing attitudes and skewed loads long
enough for me to see which gear engaged before using
forks, brakes or throttle or bailing off.

Last event that sticks in my mind = in rain slowing up
on slightly down hill run, to turn into a private paved driveway,
I held clutch in to down shift so no engine drag tire slip,
just light front + rear brake, I mildly swung a bit wide to
create a lesser curve into gravel layered driveway,
when rear tire tried to pass me on inside going 30 mph,
so could either do a suddenly sharper turn more up right -
being closer now to the driveway or
take it like a man >
sitting bolt up right - diagonally across into drainage ditch,
held the skewed angle while rear hollowed, saw indeed
I'd snicked down to first and NAILED it to both
lift bike up from too much lean and slide rear around
for no load on front tire, just dolly wheeled it in direction
of travel - till lined up with drive power off to use brakes again
and rolled to normal stop intact.

Another time was waiting behind a car for 900 Monster
to catch up and see what the speck ahead was, barely slowed,
then instantly freaked and about wheelie'd off ahead,
Oh goody took my bait!!,
I meant to snick to 2nd - remembering last pull feeling like 3rd,
but when I Nailed Peel, I heard little tinkling sounds
before the leap around car to catch up for 5 more
miles of twisted fun. After a stop to meet, we took
off again, Darn Monster out horse powering us in opens,
till shortly Peel's gear box made noises and stopped shifting.
If I'd had presence of mind I'd known to look
to see I was in 4th not 3rd -. limped home in 4th opened
er up to find 3rd gear set missing teeth.

To me the little pointer looks fastest.

hi hobot, riding like you do you cant possibly look down at the pointer to see what gear you,re in?????????

Chris,

I crashed a whole bunch so fast on THE Gravel going so slow
I didn't have a clue what went wrong until repeating many
times knowing full well I was going to crash a lot more to
get a clue on staying up right when loose as snot.
Not always my fault - often forced into panic moves, as nothing
else to loose but another splat.

I know my SV650 can't take loads and skews or leans
like Ms Peel, and my ole SV650 appliance can best most
Commandos any way you measure but for ease of operation
and smoothness. Kenny and John racers would eat most SV650's
any way measured but cost and blandness.

I KNOW what a modern can do, I KNOW what a normal
Commando can do, SO MUCH so I will never ever
press handling limits on purpose on these again as such
little to gain in speed thrills for exponentially increased risk.
Beware!
So I'm a timid pensive kitten - until I get on Ms Peel.
Nothing but rare fuel slosh slaps when front is air borne
and rather common ground effects lift/drop bother
her or me any.

Need rear set able to shift up in chicanes leaned to max.

Love the Barleycorn Rear sets, Kenny Thanks!

I have also been looking at a set of Tarozzi rear sets for my 650SS Slimline featherbed.
Rear sets under rod shiter?

I still want to be able to kick it over but cant find out how to make it work.
