Rear mudguard support bracket

I am confused about this. My mudguard is bolted to the battery tray only and I have no matching hole in the mudguard for the bottom 5/16th bolt.

Also the parts manual and Andover diagrams only show one 1/4" nut and none for the 5/16th bolt. I guess that is just an error...

Just wondering if I should be ordering one for my restoration project, then drilling the missing hole in the mudguard.

The error was apparently corrected in later parts manuals.

The Commando rear mudguard is so poorly supported that I wouldn't want to leave that out.

I use a NyLock nut on each 1/4" (#33) and a NyLock nut on the 5/16" (#32). The Cleaveloc nuts would be fine too. The spacers (#34) are a little confusing in the drawing. They are 3/16" thick and go between the frame cross piece (behind it) and the plate (#30)
 
I also use Nylocs but I reversed the 5/16" bolt so the nut is on the outside.
 
OK, so I'll need to bite the bullet and drill the missing lower hole into my new mudguard :-(

I'm wondering who sold you a mudguard without it. The originals (I believe) and the ones from AN (definitely) have a slotted and reinforced hole there. Is it a generic mudguard or one meant for Commando?
 
Didn't get it from AN but it had the correct drillings for the rear loop/light bracket and cutaway for the chainguard. It will have to do for now.

Be sure you understand how to drill stainless steel, to make the job go smoothly.
Feed it HARD, do not let the drill bit spin freely, it will work harden right away.

Be sure you are completely happy with the mudguard alignment and especially with the taillight before drilling. To me, getting the mudguard right is one of the hardest Commando jobs and I would hate to think of it without a slotted hole!
