I don't know what made me check, but my rear lamp lens has no built in reflector...
Does anyone know if the genuine & aftermarket lenses supplied by our favourite outlets have a rear facing reflector..
Strangely they all state side facing but nothing about rear facing which is the legal requirement in the U.K.
Or is it a case of fixing an external unit...... would though rather like to have one within the lamp lens itself if possible?

The “peaks and troughs” surfaces on each side of this lens are reflective prisms.

However, some MoT testers want to see a separate reflector. Just stick a round bicycle type one onto the mudguard for the test.

The earlier L679 has a similar reflective area.

As TT said, MoT inspectors, however, have either been instructed or are interpreting 'reflector' to mean a separate item now.

As the 40 year ruling for DOT testing applies to my 1972 registration, I won't have issue within testers putting their own interpretation on the regs. :)
Can I ask what E numbers are on you lens

I have my doubts on the unit I purchased from Flee bay and I suspect it's a very poor counterfeit ...mine has no E number just a series of numbers what may be fictitious part numbers.
Yes there are prisms but I'll wait till it's dark to confirm if they actually reflect

A repro L917 I have (below) has no markings but has the same reflector area. Good luck finding an original new Lucas L917 at a 'reasonable' price if that's the one you need.

I'll see what the reflective value is tonight...if it's poor I'll get one from AN or RGM rather than from some schister off the net

I may have one , let me know after you have tested yours ....

Original Lucas 917 lenses were tested and marked with BS 2516 Tested to British standard requirements ( Pre 1979 models ) before EU lighting regulations were standardised if you have a bike produced prior to 1984
it does not require an E marked lens to be legal in the UK

If I remember from using the lighting regs in a previous life, the E denotes country of manufacture
An HGV will fail testing if the E number isn't present

I have both the original Lucas and a pattern one I bought recently to modify to take an LED lamp. Can take a look and take pics if needed?

Each EU country has a specific number UK is E11 code yes vehicles produced after lighting regulations were standardised require the E mark to be legal
However this does not apply to vintage vehicles built prior to this legislation

All the Lucas beehive style and later square style I have seen have a thin aluminum plate glued onto the inside prismatic surface to make it a reflector. I have see cheapo repros where this piece was barely attached. I think I have seen cheapo repros where the reflector is missing. The reflector is nothing special. Not even a mirror finish. Just find some thin shiny aluminum and glue it in.

The L917 lens on my Norton has a reflector in it. Just a rather stiff piece of aluminum foil forced into place by the curvature and a dab of glue.
The foil came loose once and rubbed on the wires causing a short. Took me a while to find that one.
