rear iso spindle

sometimes the rear iso spindle is way longer than the nut, approx. 1/2" stickout past the nut and sometimes it is almost flush with the end of the nuts...what gives?
 
Yes. I have not compared the spindles side by side, Only looking at how much thread protrudes past the nut.
 
It would be difficult to get an accurate length measurement while its in the bike but my machine is in pieces at the moment. I measure it at 335 mm. (a bit less than 13-1/4 inches if you like).
At that length they do protrude about a half inch past the nuts.
