Hi All,

Having some issues installing rear wheel back onto new rear sprocket hub ( after chain snap link broke ,loosened chain and took most of the teeth off hub at 70 mph :oops: )
Everything looks ok after install but I just can't push the wheel onto the 3 hub paddles far enough to place spacer in after the speedo drive ....with old hub etc I never had this much of an issue.
I measured paddles on new hub and they are just under 1mm longer than the old one ,I dont want to attack paddle length just yet, Ive ordered new rubbers also, the old rubbers are approx 4000 miles old. I'm A bit apprehensive about appling to much pain to it yet as I dont want to stuuf anything up !
Any idea's appreciated,

You have a cush hub right? I found the paddles went in with new rubbers after using rubber assembly lube
and a bloody great soft faced hammer. A press would be handy. But once together the new AN rubbers have
done very well far better than the stock set. The fit is awful tight first time round.
 
You can also use your old drum sprocket to apply pressure to seat the new cush inserts. Stand on it hard and then try again with new drum.
 
What works form me is to install everything on the bike without the speedo drive, then screw the spindle in from the right side till it brings the wheel hub snug against the drum sprocket. Unscrew the spindle and there should be room to fit the speedo drive and spacer because the cush drive paddles are all the way home. If when you start this procedure the cush drive paddles are pretty far from where they need to be, you can do the trial install with the right side spacer removed also, but you should add back enough washers and / or narrower spacer such that the swing arm is not stressed.
 
Thanks Guys , It looks like it is going to need some persuasion, short of it not going on I might have to look at the hub internals again but I was pretty careful when putting back together.........
 
Try a test fit without the cush drive buffers in the hub to see if the clearance issue still exists.
Then you know for sure if the issue is simply the buffers or not.

Agreed. Assuming no problem, it may be that the rubbers are not pushed back in each location. Clean everything which will help them stick in place, put them in and then push each down and back. Then apply red rubber grease and assemble. The wooden handle of small hammer, with the speedo drive removed can be used between the swingarm and wheel. Once the hub is all the way on, hold the wheel so it doesn't slip out, slip on the speedo drive, slip in the spacer and slide in the axel.

Brake fluid works as a lubricant in the absence of red rubber grease.

Thanks Chuckwagon, will do when I can get back into the shed , Greg I've seen the madass140 one piece axle, but as usual shipping is a real killer to get to NZ at the moment

Ya, as god-awful as it had gotten within the US, it's ridiculous to the guys in the middle of the Pacific Ocean or the UK/Europe. Coast to coast in the US is now about twice what is was this time in 2020 and to Virginia from the UK is now about four times as much. My latest AN order, arriving today, was 1178 GBP for the parts and 232 GBP for shipping - would have been about 55 GBP two years ago!
 
Just had a quick check of hub and wheel without rubbers and the clearance has disappeared , so appears that the wheel just needs pushed on with a bit more attention. Will try the above suggestions to get the wheel completely set in .

Keep in mind that if you need to demount it after you have it in service, the first one or two thousand miles
will required a pry bar to separate. Pay attention here, do the words 'flat tyre' catch your eye?
 
Can someone please confirm which way the dished retaining washer ( 32 ) sits against the bearing spacer (23) on the Hub side ? On the Andovernorton site it looks like washer sit's with the pry slots facing towards the bearing spacer ?

The dished washer doesn't have any pry slots (it is normally removed as shown in the pic, below). The bearing spacer 23 should pass through the dished washer (also felt washer 33 and felt retaining washer 30).
