The rear brake on my 72 Norton stinks. Anyone got a suggestion on which brand of brake shoes will give some decent braking on the rear? Thanks,Skip

critical to have them arc'd and all clean up surfaces for proper function when fitting. Mine will lock up rear tire if desired

+1

Vintage Brake will turn the Commando rear brake into an excellent stopper. Very progressive.

" I find that any rear brake is too much rear brake unless the road surface is gravel or the speed very slow"

These shoes transform my rear braking. The key is keeping them clean. The cast hub creates surface rust, along with other normal particulates, which imbeds into the shoes over time due to the nature of the surface. Particularly in the spring before the first ride, I wire wheel the hub and clean the shoes. I am sure all Norton hub brakes would respond to this treatment. A small inconvienence in comparision to the improvment.

I have had them for a few years now and the wear seems fine and along with the higher price point, the improved braking is soooo worth it.

Arc'ing is good but i have never had it done, yet my brakes will lock up on any surface with what I would call a relatively normal amount of effort. Smooth, not grabby.

I believe these are an RGM exclusive although Commando Specialties offers them sometimes and gets them from RGM.

the picture shows shoes with woven linings like we used on the old British rod braking systems from the 20's,30',40's and 50's
Up close you can see copper impregnated in them.
So just how old are you?

63. we had a lot of old vehicles on our roads, and a lot of restored vehicles belonging to one Make Car Club people. I got good at fixing all those types of brakes and sorting out problems with beam axle systems etc etc.

I agree with Pete.V, I put a pair of RGM front shoes on my S-Type and it transformed the braking without any machining or anything other than simply swapping them with the pair that were in there.
