Rear brake lining thickness?

looking for lining thickness measurement of a new rear lining
and the minimum at which replacement is needed.

while I am at it...what about drum resurfacing? what is minimum thickness? what is a new drum measure to?

Good question. Does anyone have advice on making the rear drum brakes work as good as possible? What shoes are best & what's the best way to have them fit good etc. I'm going to be using rearsets on this 73 850 which if I remember from years passed renders the stoping power of the rear brake to a meer sugestion!!!
 
hi gtsun,best advise i can give is,have a machineist turn the drum in a lathe and make sure its perfectly round,fit oversize linings to the brake shoes and have them turned down to fit the drum perfectly,

Hi same as you 74 Commando rearsets and rear brake loses a lot of braking effect. I always replace shoes when the brale arm approaches the vertical since maximum leverage is obtained for all practical purposes just before 90 degrees.(RGM have produced a rod setup am trying to get more info.)
 
Even modern sportbikes have weak rear brakes. It's the front brakes that do 90% of the braking and all you really want a rear brake to do is keep the back end in line and help out with trail braking.

A stock Norton rear drum will lock up the rear wheel under hard braking. What more do you want? My 900SS SP Ducati will not lock up the rear wheel. I see this as a good thing. The rear brake should give a steady, progressive feel but short of lock-up.

My advice is to spend the time, money and effort to upgrade the front brake and not worry about trying to improve the rear.
