I just replaced the bearings in my rear hub / brake . 74, 850 . going by the manual , there should be a washer between the stub axel & the brake drum , I don't have one & the bike has been running for years .
The diagram doesn't give much detail , just washer pt no 067603 . What does this washer look life & what is it's purpose . I suppose It could have gotten lost while stripping the assy , but I think it fairly unlikely as it was done on a clean bench with plenty of room & no parts flying around .

its very thin and yes they usually get lost over the years, dont worry about it if the brake plate is not rubbing on the sprocket drum.

On the other hand it does rub you need the washer. Ive seen this twice in the last few years.

I just did the same thing on my 70 750. I picked up a drum and backing plate at Davenport for my project bike. I'm changing over from a bolt up rear sprocket to a cush drive one. Needed the "guts" of the drum, stub axle spacers and the like. The drum I got was pretty much trash and I didn't buy the parts for the drum. Walridge had a sealed double row bearing on sale last year and I picked one up as back stock. Re-packed the wheel bearings on the cush drive rear wheel.

+1 also without the spacer the complete drum and chain moves outward where the chain might rub against the left inner side of the chain guard.
