Hi All,

In an article in Classic Bike Guide August 2007 Tony Curzon mentioned with respect to his P11A Ranger 750, "Ron changed the fourth gear pinions in line with Norton service literature and fitted new bearings and bushes to sort out the gear box ..." Can anyone expand on fourth gear pinion problem and it's solution?

Thanks, Norm (in chilly Ann Arbor)

Service Release N-61 states that orders for layshaft high gear pinion 040284 and mainshaft pinion 040422 are to be filled with 061058 and 061057 respectively. This release is dated September 1971, but states it is a reminder of information originally issued in 1966.

Unfortunately it does not give a reason for the replacement.

Thanks for the information, Ron.

I subsequently found the information below in a sidebar connected to the same CBG article.

"An improved pair of fourth gears were fitted from engine number 128646 - October 1968 - and they are a worthwhile retro-fit. They can only be fitted in pairs and you'll need:

Sleeve gear assembled 06-1057 Mainshaft; Sleeve gear 06-1056; and Lay shaft 4th gear 06-1058."

Cheers, Norm

Bit of topic, 128648 is sitting in my garage, waiting it's turn for resto. No tranny guts with it.
