Well I've helped with 2 incidences of the rear hub double-row bearing circlip popping out in the past 2 years . Today helping Joe with it , and 2 seasons ago helping Manse. Big rubbing noise with each wheel revolution whilst driving only is the audible clue. Use a NEW circlip tapped home into groove tightly and fully home , sharp edge towards paddles ,wheelside. Warned.

So the burr side of the NEW circlip is facing out away from the bearing of which it is retaining? This is proper.

Very correct. And tap it firmly home in it's slot. :!: It's known as an inverted retaining ring , and the sharp edge of it must face away from the direction of thrust. The side that faces the special hub double row bearing is the more rounded edge. Circlips are to be replaced every time as they are cheap.
