Quiz, what is this ?

Well :?:

Jean

Front wheel of a motorcycle?

Or one of those chopper style "internal brake" hubs?

I was going to make a wild guess that it was a hydraulic brake of some sort...

Seems like it would be hard to disapate heat. Maybe that's why there aren't more of them around?

It is a special brake the French came up with in the 70 -ties.
It's hydraulically operated .
The 2 sides of the hub are the slave cylinders .
works like a disk brake .
I have seen it only once or twice , long ago .
can't remember the name ..

That's it, now find the name.

Luchier ?

-Ring-a-ding-ding, we have a winner :D :D :D It is indeed a Luchier front brake, the owner reported it was very strong and progressive. Very similar to this: http://www.360brake.com/

Check the beautiful bike it was on:

Unfortunately, he was cut off by a kid on a 1198 Duck who missed a turn and this was the outcome:

He has started collecting parts to rebuild it, unfortunately, the front brake is a total loss.

Maybe not as strong and progressive as it needed to be?

In a case like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WNO88yqC ... re=related what kind of brakes could stop you in time? In his case, it was probably something like that except it was a guy in the other lane who missed his turn. If you have ever been at Deal's Gap or one of the many roads in the California mountains where many try to take curves as fast as they dare, sometimes they miss and crash all by their lonesome selves, but sometimes, they cross the path of an oncoming vehicule, if you are unlucky enough, this is what happens and the best brakes in the world won't help

that 360 brake is cool, but I looked at the spoke wheel...takes like 100 or more spokes...ugly

I couldn't find the one you mention, but the drag bike on the left looks like it has one on the back wheel, fairly standard spoke pattern. The only drawback I can see from these brakes is mainly the width required. The Norton front fork has a bit more than 7 inches and this brake takes a bit over 2½" per side plus it has to be in the air stream for cooling. While it is cool, a big drum like a Grimeca does it for me

Was thinking it'd be cool on a bobber type bike, but this is the pic from one of their recommended dealers
Quiz, what is this ?

kinda ridiculous

they look awesome on mag wheels though

If they can make a wheel with that many spokes, they can make one with less too, the chopper guys like out of the ordinary stuff, that may be the reason they don't push the more mundane way of lacing a wheel :D

Squids have taken over the role of "stereotypical biker idiots" from the old version of leather-clad bad guys.

They now account for most of what is wrong with the motorcycling population in thew USA (and many other countries).

Most are inexperienced idiots that are in WAY over thier heads, except perhaps in a straight line at posted speed limits (even then, they are typically talking on thier bluetooth cell phones or listening to i-tunes, unaware and totally inconsiderate of the world around them)
