quick question - horn mount to battery tray...

the horn assembly has a triangle shaped bracket that mounts to the battery tray. question - does the horn assembly mount forward or aft of the tab on the battery tray - that is, on the front wheel side or the rear wheel side? should have made note of it during teardown. thanks in advance....

Dont forget the spacers
"double nut spacer" -- the only way I could get things together without anything in a bind was to increase the 1" mounting bolts to 1-1/4", and for spacers, I had to use a double nut arrangement. I finished it off with a couple nylon insert lock nuts. the parts book was not real clear - at least to the point that I could understand. fairly sure, the rear fender on my Mk2 had been off before, and I have my doubts whether or not it was re-assembled correctly. :D

There should be a standard nut (*033057*) and washer on each to secure the horn bracket to the battery carrier.....

......then mudguard/fender, washers and self-lock nuts (items 6 & 10).

that's the way I initially installed the fender to battery tray/horn mount (trial fit). without putting things into a bind, I barely had any threads showing (standard nut) on the fender side. I noted I had about 3 threads showing between the fender and battery tray nut - about the thickness of a standard nut. I probably could have pulled the thing together, but didn't want to take the chance of distorting the stainless fender. adding an additional nut, increasing the bolt length by .25 inches, and using a final ny-lock nut seemed to solve several issues. fender seems firm and secure and nothing is in a bind. all other mounts, including the tail light assembly fell into place. when I dis-assembled the fender, battery tray, and horn assembly, all I had was two 1" bolts (correct), eight external tooth lock washer (4 each, each bolt), and 4 standard nuts - two each bolt. obviously not factory correct, and presently not factory, but it's the only way I could get things to come together.

there may be an issue with the upper fender mount - the one with a couple spacers. the previous owner(s) jury rigged the mount for the podtronics unit - it was mounted by one bolt on the aft side of the fender cross brace, with spacer between the fender mount bracket. i assumed it to be correct because of the rolled edge of the cross member brace - i reassembled it to that configuration -

here's a pic of my double nut/spacer assembly -

quick question - horn mount to battery tray...

one added note. finally , battery's in place. when i got the bike, there was no battery, or even a method of securing a battery, the podtronics unit was hanging by one bolt off the upper fender bracket. the wiring was cut, spliced, and in general, a complete mess. i wasn't crazy about the original factory battery hold down, and wanted to use a more modern gel-mat battery. i mounted the battery using a couple pieces of all-thread, with top brace. mounted the podtronics unit to a sheetmetal bracket on the rear of the battery tray. i had to relocate the flasher unit to work with the lucas, service replacement wiring harness.

open to feedback and comments on the battery /podtronics mount. if I've opened a can of worms, better to address it now than later....

Looks good to me. Other than the cooling fins should be vertical for optimum convection. I went a similar route, and mounted my regulator to the back side of the air filter plate.
