Thanks Ken. This will help immensely when I have to rebuild eventually. I have 2 of these and found both to be a little quirky about upshifting to 5th. If I just shifted like the other gears, it wouldn't engage, so I had to firmly shift and it felt like that extra push would engage 5th with an extra click. It looks like the inside cover mod may be necessary. Overall, I'm happy with them. They're really nice in the twisties here on the East Coast where you operate around 3K and up RPM's. Just pick a gear and keep it in that range.

Thank you.

I just ran across this sketch I made the first time I had to order parts for my Quaife gearset. It shows the layout, with the number of teeth on each gear, as well as the part numbers. The part numbers all start with "A 1H1" followed by the number. For example, the mainshaft sleeve gear is A 1H1 09, and has 22 teeth. Hope this helps you.

I just ran across a similar drawing in the INOA Tech Digest, and scanned it.

This might also be a good place to mention that there was an earlier version of the Quaife 5-speed that had a different design for the dog clutches, and the affected gears are not interchangeable with the later ones. I think the design was changed somewhere in the late '60s, so any Commando with a Quaife 5-speed is likely to have the later design that we've been talking about here. I've only encountered the earlier design once, back in the '70s, when Sonny Angel showed me some spares he had for them in his shop near San Diego.
