So...

Production Racer Tail Light

I know how the original ones mounted but I don't think this one is like those.

This fairing has three threaded inserts (I'm not going to go into the QC on this unit...) to hold it onto the rear fender. As we all know to mount the seat you must trim the fairing down.

These are temporary bolts. Now when the fairing get's trimmed the upper single bolt goes away.

I don't think the U-bracket will work here.

Any suggestions?

That's how it's looks like on my bike:

So as you can see Dave, the tail fairing has been modified according to the technical release N3/12 I've send you.
The stainless rod is the fixation of the number plate.

Do you know how the fairing is attached? Is it will two bolts from below? What does the U-bracket actually attach to?

I will not be using that license bracket so I will not need to trim the fairing as much as yours has been.

On the inside of the fairing there is a 15 mm. thick layer (epoxy ?) parallel to the fender in which there are two nuts inserted. (as you described) and so indeed the fairing is fixed to the fender with 2 bolts from below. The U bracket serves as fixation for the fender to the frame. The 'Dzus bracket" serves to secure the seat - which I wouldn't recommend. After a while, that's what you'ld get:

The fairing is trimmed to avoid contact between seat and fairing. (see picture in my previous post) and there should be enough space to remove the seat.

So I found this part. This will hold the fender on so the fairing doesn't take the load.

I then this bracket will take the rest of the load. (Yes, those bolts are just for mocking purposes)

I need to trim the fairing and then wait for the tail light to show up. I have a Lucas one but the rubber gasket looks like it was in a fire! I have a repro one on the way from Clubmans.

I was just a little nervous as I started cutting the fairing. Just a hacksaw and cleaned it up with the diegrinder with a sandpaper disk. I think it turned out pretty good.

swooshdave, do you still have the piece of the tail light mount that you removed? Mine is broken and missing at that very point.

Thanks,

Thanks,

In fact I do. I should go grab it before it hits the trash. Be aware that it may not work. I'm not sure how the stock pieces fit.

It looks about right and fiberglass can be forgiving with the proper repair kit. PM if you can ship it and I can PayPal costs.

thanks,

thanks,

This should work, I was thinking about the 850 tail light which mounts differently.

Yes, I'd be glad to send it. PM me your address. There is no charge for shipping.

I'm gonna hi-jack swooshdave's thread to say thanks! Your taillamp piece is the perfect repair for my busted taillamp bracket. Now to just bridge the gap. :D

Sheesh, that's not a hijack!

As we were discussing, to bridge that much gap you may want to attach a metal strip and then 'glass around it. Then sand to final shape, prime and paint.

As a side note, I sent it 1st class on Monday and it's all the way across the country already.
