Hey guys

Am trying to finish the re-assemble post bottom end rebuild. Have been taking way to long and the sun is on its way.

Question is with respect to prming the crank. I thought I heard that you must do this by pumping oil in through the oil pump junction.

Sound right to you guys or is my memory going?

Thanks

Before you install the timing cover, source some type of squirt bottle and just squeeze some oil into the nose of the crank.

I use a recycled tranny oil bottle.

Like GP says and make sure it comes out the sides of the rods before you stop.

If you're not in a hurry and the engine is in the frame with oil tank connected just fill the tank and leave it a few days with the pistons at BDC. Oil will fill the crank unless you have a Mk3 antisumping valve or other that works.

hi b-stone!

i also agree with the others...and a method i use to get plenty of oil in an easy way into the freshly rebuild crankcase:
take off the tachdrive housing and pour oil through the hole into the crankcase....there is space enough to get the oil passing by the camshaft.

That won't get it into the crankshaft though Chris!

dave, you are right. i meant after priming the crankshaft gallery it is a good way to get plenty of oil into the case.
when i start the engine first after rebuild i like to have a little more oil in....on the safe side for the the cam....imo...

The only way to prime a Norton crank is to pressure feed the gallery. You probably have tried to use a standard oil can to pump oil into the crank and were rewarded by being squirted by blow-back.
1. get a small grease gun, the type that uses small grease cartridges.
2. Get a similar sized banjo as the rocker feed. I used an AN3 brake banjo for braided streel lines
3. Drill and tap banjo to accept a threaded grease fitting, 1/4 x 28 is common. Fit in place of the rocker feed
4. Remove the spring loaded piston, turn the gun upside down and fill with oil
5. Pump away. the tube will soon empty, repeat . The crank is PRIMED!
