Primary Cover Venting

Anyone have an idea of how to make something like these?

Turn them up on a lathe (Jean, are you busy?) and fit some mesh. Maybe o-rings or something to retain them?

I am thinking you take your standard plugs and drill or use a hole saw to cut out the center, then tig weld in some expanded metal and polish it up. I have to admit I have never seen expanded metal that small in detail but that is what it looks like to me.

I like the slots on this one:

Even better is howJim did his:

Dave, those wouldn't be too hard to make, but I wonder if they would provide enough ventilation.

Mesh are from a fifties Blaupunkt radio by the way.

I wouldn't run a hole saw, much better to put them in a lathe, no?

From all reports you probably don't need any ventilation at all.

Of course it is better, it would even be better to have a CNC mill

You are probably right about not needing any ventilation, so why not just put the plugs back in and leave it at that :?:

Jean

Well, it's all about taste, of course, since venting is not functionally needed. To me, all those vented/slotted covers/plugs look "wrong" on the bike but obviously we all have a different idea of what looks "cool!" :)

Yeah, I like the look of an original, unmolested cover too.

I've been told that just removing the sliding felt seal carrier gives enough ventilation, but I'm a Chain Girl so I wouldn't know. :D I do like the look of those mesh plugs though.

Looks like fuel injection to me ;) . Wonder if the latest Royal Enfield setup will work, maybe one per cylinder.

If you want to have some fun just do a search by "comstock" on the forum...

So, back to the subject. Jean, should I send you my inspection caps so you can core them out. Have just the threaded rings would be better than just the holes. Not sure how to do the mesh yet. What are those caps made from? Aluminum? Or cast dog shite like the Amals?

PM sent. The covers are cast aluminium, just like the chaincase.

With the RGM unit, the clutch basket swells more than I thought it would, to the point where I will have to turn the cable adjuster in while out and about. A little air flow helps keep things calm in there for me. I could also run oil with these belts.

On another note, these covers seem to be so available, you could cut one up and slap one on to fit your mood for that day. Maybe get really good at it like those people who do pumpkins.

On my next project, I plan to ditch both covers and put a simple belt guard, that way it would stay cool enough.

Makes me nervous - speaking as one who has gotten my pants leg caught up in a bicycle chain a few times. Good thing bellbottoms are out these days... aren't they?

hi all, those primary covers look "cool" but there not really,a properly vented primary would need entry holes or a scoop at the front and exit holes at the back, something like you would do with a drum front brake

If you ride in the rain at all or wash your bike down, don't bother unless you like stripping your primary drive and clutch to pry your rusty clutch parts apart. If it's a trailer queen, go ahead. Ask me how I know. And this was just with the inspection covers removed. Some of the wilder machined inners and outers would be a disaster in the real world.

I have seen covers with the forward facing portion of the raised areas cut out with screening imbedded. I keep my eyes out for it. An area behind the clutch for exhaust would be good to.
