Hello All

Great forum.........Has anyone installed a belt drive on a mkIII?? What if any differences are there between the belt drives sold by Norvil,RGM,Mick Hemmings,Old Britts ie installation,quality,$$... thks Jurg

Hi Jurg1,
that is something I would like to know as well… obviously the crowd sticks with the standard chain drive. Less clutch friction, easier operating and less noise from the primary drive via belt drive does seem tempting, though…
Norvil sells them for about 200,00 pound Sterling, plus VAT and shipping. Not a bargain in my book, really.

How much do gears cost?
At £200 the belt drive is (IMO) one of the best improvements on a commando. It is in the opinion of racers and people more experienced than me...that the heavy triplex chain is responsible for most of the gearboxes gear brinelling gearface damage. I am sold on that theory also. They virtually eliminate the vibration from the primary caused by the primary chain resonance/chain whip.

I an going to put a belt on my atlas also, but I need to decide if it will use the AMC or commando clutch mainshaft.

DynoDave,

Yours is the first explanation of "why a belt drive" that makes sense to me for a street bike. I understand why a racer would spring for a belt drive, but could never justify the expense for a street bike. If it is easier on the gearbox, that just might give me the reason I need to give one a try.

Thanks!

Well, I know what I want for xmas…

Next on my list will be the automatic cam chain adjuster. The good thing about all these mods is that they are massive improvements to the engine while being subtle and not visually noticeable. They don’t change the looks of our bikes, but boost maintenance to a fiddle, hazzle-free state.

Cheers from Hamburg, Germany!
