Hi, new on forum here. Can someone help me?

I need price for new Commando in year 1970/71. Do anyone knew prices for other similar bikes of that time?

Any help would be appreciated.

Remember you are dealing with inflation. Big time. Compare the price of gold per ounce in 1970 to what it is worth today. It is a shame to see how our dollar has been de-valued. :x

Thanks for quick info eezeetoo.

CanukNortonNut: I know prices for some goods in 1970, like cars, food, etc... i just need info how much was worth then. I know that 1 dollar does not have same buying power now as it was 40+ years ago.

I bought a new 1970 Fastback in 1971 at Elite Motors in London for $1030 USD (did not have to pay the VAT as long a I took it out of the Country). A 1971 would have been $70 more. I sold it 3 months later w/9500 miles on it in Amsterdam for $970. Those were the days!

I bought a Roadster in yellow in June of 1971 from Town & Country Cycle in Fullerton, CA. It was sold as a 1971 1/2 model. We now know that it was actually a left over 1970 model but I didn't know it at the time and wouldn't have cared if I had known. I liked the lack of turn signals and the steel controls better than the new Lucas controls on the latest model. I paid $1400.00 US dollars. As I recall, this was more than the new Triumphs were selling for but I really HATED the new oil in frame models and thought the Norton was more motorcycle.

Hi Pero,
In 1971 in Italy they sold a Commando for Lire 980.000 (506 Euros).
Ciao.

I bought my Commando new in 1972 in the UK. One of the first Interstate Combats and it cost £667.

In 1973 I paid 900 bucks for a used '71 with 8k miles at a dealer in Memphis, TN. I couldn't afford a new one. Heck, I still can't! :)

What cost $1835 in 1973 would cost $9353.32 in 2012.

Go take a quick look at ebay. Id say about ball park for a
good overhauled bike if you are lucky to get what you paid for.

I recall that the big sell-off of 1975 Norton-Villiers-Triumph Commandos and Tridents in early 1976 had a price of $1999.

I bought a silver Interstate. The dealer had a J Player replica that I gave a test ride.
Still have the Interstate.

When I left N-V in 1968 to emigrate to the US, I could have purchased a new Commando at an employee discount price of £475, but couldn't afford to do it. We left the UK with less than £600 - our total net worth other than our household belongings.

Hi ''neighbour''

But 500€ of that time was a lot more money than it is now.

London, 1970 Sept, I bought new fireflake blue 1970 Commando with a nice heavy duty rack on the rear for $900 American. My brother bought a yellow one. Bikes were purchased in North Finchely. Not one new Triumph Bonneville was available at that time. Shipped both bikes back to America.

$1400 in 1970 equals $8235 in 2012 dollars, your currency has lost over 83% of it's value and purchasing power since then. Do you know why?

" your currency has lost over 83% of it's value and purchasing power since then. Do you know why?"

Is this a test question or just a question?

I'm no economist but probably the reason is the same reason that virtually everyone else's currency has done the same thing...or worse. ;)

I paid $750USD in 72 for my 70 S type. It had 4K miles and was in good enough shape to last another 4 years/10K miles without any major work, not that I could afford it. That's $4192 in 2013 USD according to the inflation calculator I found at $5.59. Considering I have nearly $8K in it at this point, that was a good deal.

It's snowing like crazy here, we've got about 10 inches out there now, but it's almost like rain it's so warm, 34F. I don't think I'll be riding today.
