Jerry, it's worse with hotrods.
I went to a car show in Maui last week. The prize of the show was a 34 Ford with all the right stuff, 350 chev 330 horse, overdrive auto trans, 9 inch ford rear end, rack and pinion PS, independant front suspension, 4 wheel disc brakes, AC, beautiful leather interior with wool carpets.
The Maroon metallic paint looked to be about 1/2" thick and the entire car shone like a mirror.
My friend who is a professional Hotrod builder was blown away by the quality of the components and the work.

Cost to build was 117,000 US
Appraised at 80,000 US

For sale for $40,000 US

Glen

How could you not buy it at that price??!! Cheaper than a Vincent! :P

I'm thinking pretty hard on it. Low CDN dollar takes the fun out of it. A year and a half ago the CDN $ was worth about $1.02 US, today it's only 68.8 cents. Unfortunately, the CDN dollar follows oil prices in an almost perfect correlation.

Yes, I know the Empire dollar... I have relatives coming for a visit next month from Seattle, so I ordered some parts from CNW for them to bring - the x-rate for that today is 1.55 NZD. The last time I ordered from Matt in May '14 it was 1.16.

I have seen them as high as $18,000 NZ on Trademe, but right now there is one advertised for $60,000 NZ. Go Figure

They are worth what someone is willing to pay. The Porsche 911 market has gotten rather insane IMO as well. Jokes at the water cooler in the Pcar world let us all wet. I'm happy I bought one cheap a few years ago but it's really silly these days when a clapped out rust bucket is going for 20+ and a nice long hood pre-74 brings well over 50. 930 turbos are 100k and going.

Ducati prices are insane. An oval case bevel is untouchable now and have become blue chip stocks going over 50 a few years ago. Even the unloved Darhma bikes are getting up in value. I bought my MK3 18months ago for 6k and felt it was about 1500 too much. Of course it's a money pit but maybe I'll break even in a few years. Thing is I buy my gears to enjoy, riding, driving and wrenching on. I'm fortunate enough I've managed to get a few diamonds in the rough but many are now out of reach of the average Joe right? Fact is they always were...

Lancia Aurellias in the 50's were over 6,000 bucks, when a nice Porsche was <3 & a nice MG was 1200. So these nice Marques have always been high, dropped off then jumped back and some gone mad. Several Lancia Spiders have fetched over a million, one 1.9 mil. So I guess 100k Ducati SS bikes will become the norm, sad for me I didn't buy one instead of my Pual Smart in 2006; I almost bought a sweet Oval case SS in 05' for under 10! Dumb move... Oh well. The Paul Smart is worth almost 2x what ai paid for it though! Silly!! I stopped racing it at he track though... Too expensive to replace in my mind but it seems silly not to ride it like it was meant to be, fast hard and leaned over screaming out of a corner at Summit Point with the front tire off the ground :

Spot on. It's a tough world if you selling, the money is in the building when the market is good. Right now classic American cars have tanked. The crazy muscle car market has slumped, even Corvette prices have slumped. The crazy Barret Jackson Hemi Replicas finally fizzled. I appreciate the time and money that went into these cars but it was insane seeing fake Hemi Cudas and Challengers go well over 100k. They can't sell them for much more than 50 I bet... Too many fools cashing equity out of their house they paid too much for to begin with.

I saw that 850 go for $18K at the Las Vegas auction and was stumped about what was so special about that bike to bring that kind of money, Like someone mentioned above, he couldn't re-sell it for that. I'm not a big fan of 850's anyhow. My first commando was a '72 Combat I purchased new that I was sorry I sold so about 15 years later I purchased an '84 850 in the Union Jack colors that was allegedly rebuilt by Brian Slark. The thing was a dog compared to my 750 and I almost died when I had to make a panic stop using that lousy front brake. I felt lucky to unload that toad for $5K in 1994. When I decided to get another Commando last year I deliberately looked for a 750 with a drum brake. Found a good one in Canada and with the exchange rate, it was a deal. It's been hot-rodded and is fast. Anyone want to give me $18K for it I'll sell it in a New York minute

Back in the mid 80's I wanted an SS, but funds only went to a Darmah. The Darmah is a great bike, I rate mine higher than my Combat. However if I had bought the SS probably would have had to sell it to fund house kids but the Darmah after 29 years is still around.
I'm 54 and never really had much to do with English bikes till the 90's. I'm thinking kick start Brit bikes have reached peak " I want" with the demograph who lusted after them, hence high Commando prices, I suspect Honda 750/4's and Z1000's will be the next ones to go sky high.
Mid 90's Ducatis are good buying, lots of fun, plentiful parts and you can tinker on them.
My mate had a Vincent Black Shadow he was dealing with as part of a will recently, I barely noticed it sitting next to the 750/4, Lemans 2 and R90s.
I have a VW Bus and Single cab, would not be able to afford them now.

Anyone agree with me when I blame this whole price-circus on all these stupid TV-shows that have invaded practically every channel? Seems there´s a new show every week, even more stupid than the others  If people believe that´s how it works when buying and selling cars or bikes, then it´s no wonder they want big money for whatever they are selling. Every single one of those shows are fakes, every show is recorded from a script, every person reads lines from a script, total bogus!! But if you see it on TV or read it on the internet it got to be true, right....
Tommy

Yes I believe the series T.V. shows have a lot to inflating prices and pander to boys dreams of finding that special little love project in a barn or shed with pigeon poops on it ,a clueless farmer clearing things out or a widow situation. Dreams made real on T.V.

Buyer's that pay too much are the real problem. It's been going on for years.

Then the guy with the barn find or rust bucket see's the auction prices and his junk is worth a fortune...and so on.

Eventually the market flattens out when there isn't any new money available and prices stabilize...or the economy goes in the tank.

Learned a long time ago that you build a project for yourself, not to make money.

Take a look around ... it's not just old bike prices going up .... international finance is not my thing but greater powers than TV shows are at work and in motion ...

Glen its the same here in Aussie land our $$$ has just gone under 70 cents for the first time in many years, our GOVT. and farmers love the lower $$$ but as a consummer its not very good, I am glad I brought all my Norton upgrades when the Aussie $$$ was in line or above the US $$$, I brought new main bearings and other bearing for my project bike 650 Manxman but when rebuilding a mates Commando I used the main bearings in it but now the $$$ has dropped I now got to pay more to replace the main bearing.
But one good thing is we are getting cheaper fuel so more longer rides planned, a few months ago we were paying up to $1.60 lt and now is down to nearly a $1lt but some fuel outlets are not lowing their prices as much and are making more profits above their wholesale prices.

Here also I am finding a lot of couples are splitting up and as part of any settlement the owners of classic bikes and mussle cars that they have built up or brough over a life time or when they had the money to spend are now putting on very high prices hoping that they can't sell them as I have a few mates going down that road, I have told my wife if that happens to us she can live in the house and I will move down to the shed and I have lived in my house all my life.

Gas here has dropped to below $1.00 around $0.96 a litre and maybe lower tomorrow when Gov. sets price ... each year I get something for the Commando ... this year was to be new rims and spokes .... with the way our dollar is ... a $2000.00 parts price is up to $3000.00, I think I will just ride more with the cheap gas and hope the value of our money goes up soon ...

Oil up 5 % and the Canadian dollar back over 70 cents. The bottom has been reached.
You heard it here first :D

I thought we were on the edge of a financial abyss... less demand for oil, commodities, fiat money...65 cents to the US and $1.80 a litre NZ

Since I just learned a new expression (fiat money), or the meaning of said expression, I just want to clarify my username; Fiatfan. It has solely to do with old Italian cars, nothing else :!:  . I´ve never heard that expression before, but it was interesting to read about it.

I agree 100%. American television is total shit and the Speed Channel and History Channel have really raised prices through the roof. The only good thing that's come about might be he increased vendors and manufacturing for old car parts, but even then the shit is cranked out in China and worthless...

Also helped along by Bevel Ducatis and Commandos featuring in 'lifestyle accessories' adverts here in the UK.
Apart from the investment potential which always seems to take a leap with every stock market flop, they are seen as being a 'cool thing', and rightly so ;)

The recent stuff (tanks, pistons etc.) arriving from the Far East is in a different league to what we came to expect back in the day.
I just wish Bevel spares were as cheap and readily available. That said, availability is improving, but £400 for a kickstart, and Chinese rims stamped 'Borrani' with the 'genuine, original dies' are a bit hard to swallow
