I received today a replacement oil seal for my Mk3 starter from a supplier here in Oz. It's from Andover Norton, bagged up with the correct part number (55.0672) however the OD is 0.075" too big. I have spoken with the supplier and he is at a loss - does anyone have a similar experience? I am going to try a metric size 17 27 7 and see if I can get any joy from that.

Not quite what you want but if you have a lathe (or know someone who has and has the skill to use it) you can ditch the bush and seal. Replacing it with a 6203 2RS bearing. This necessitates bonding an alloy fill in piece into the drive end plate that then allows you to machine it to contain the 6203. Reduce the rotor shaft to 17mm, leaving a shoulder to control end thrust. This mod frees the starter, stops the rotor wearing into the drive plate and makes the kickstart redundant The photos explain better than words.

Well there's a reason for everything. Got a reply from Andover Norton - that particular seal is for a rotary. Apparently any part number beginning in 55 is a rotary part. And the 17 27 7 metric seal does the job.

I looked in my parts bins, The Prestolite #s on the box are 36-956B and XA-1251, None turn up on E bay.

Near as I can measure it is 1.065 " OD and .650 ID, a seal shop can match you up with them , If you give them the demensions
