Gabriel from Slovakia has posted on the N.O.C. website looking for a new engine .When I asked him how badly damaged it was he sent some pics, and Oh boy what a mess. I don't know if this topic has already been posted but if not look at these horror photos. 😖

Bummer!
That looks like some serious detonation related damage. Did he hear any pinging, or feel engine surging before the bang?

Did he say what happened ?

Looks like the head of a valve dropped and the other valve from that cylinder is wedged up into the port, from the picture of the cylinder head combustion chamber. Or something (metal, nut, bolt, spark plug, who know) went into combustion chamber. Looking at combustion chamber and piston I would guess it’s the head of the valve that did that, from all the marks on the combustion chamber and piston, but why did it drop or snap of is the question? And where is the head of the valve, probably in the bottom of the oil pan?
I suspect with that kind of damage the engine was running and it came to a sudden stop and wouldn’t, turn over. If the crank and con rods are good it would be a good project for a new pistons, cylinder barrels, and complete cylinder head from Thiel ( I hope I spelled that right). Being from Europe I would send him a email with pics and ask for a quote, after tearing down the engine and checking it over

I don't think I would trust that right side rod that hit the cylinder wall.
Have to check the rod and main bearings also for metal bits.
Could this have been a cam chain/timing failure that allowed valve to piston contact?
Did Gabriel pull the timing cover to check the cam chain and tensioner?

He's looking at a crank assy then , otherwise a crank specialist ? I don't think you can get just rods from Norton ? What year was the motor/bike Peebee ? Just had a look at NOC UK , and its a 2012 . He should go to Norton and ask about his options ?

Probably not, given a recent email that a legacy 961 owner received...he was also advised him not to ride his bikes by all accounts. They lost a future customer as a result, as he was thinking of buying a re-release 961.
The crank is supplied to Norton pre-assembled by their Taiwanese supplier.

Gabriel is on the right track aka new engine.
Dump that POJ or use it as a boat anchor.

Based on the condition of that powerplant it could cost more to bring back to proper running condition than to buy a new one.
Either way I feel for the guy, been there done that.
