points housing

How to keep oil from passing through the bearing and into the points housing. The AN drawing shows an oil seal. What I have leaves no room for an oil seal...no recess, nothing. Any ideas?

The early points housings did not have a seal. This was introduced later around 1968-69. You can cut a recess in the housing to receive the seal, or live without it. I run EI in my P11's and '68 Commando, so a little oil mist doesn't seem to affect anything. My P11 and P11A do not have seals, the Ranger 750 and '68 Commando have the later housings with seals.

I'll run without it then. I'm installing a boyer.

Without knowing the bearing spec, it isn't available in a 2RS option?
Sealed both sides (and pre-lubricated a-la wheel bearings).
...or 1RS - lubricated one side.

That's a good idea
Best to leave seals on both sides imo
Those sealed for life bearings are designed to last many thousands of miles

They are caged needle roller bearings, two on the later models, a bronze bush and single needle bearing on the early ones.

what I have must be the early one with the needle bearing near the timing cover and a bronze bushing near the points. There is NO recess to fit an oil seal or o-ring. If there is such a thing as a 2RS or RS needle bearing it would prevent oil from reaching the bushing. It really looks like Norton never ran any kind of oil seal which doesn't make much sense especially with points which foul easily. The solution would be to set up the housing in the mill and bore it for an oil seal. there is room to install the later roller bearing and push it deeper into the housing. This adds a lot more time to the project, however.

Seattle##gs, I can serve you with a CAD drawing how to machine the early housing for the original needle roiller bearing and seal. This drawing is based on the genuine AMC/NV drawing issued in 1968 which I am not allowed to hand out. A couple of these housings are on my shelf, and I plan to have them modified according to the drawing.

I'll take it. I have a table top mill so it's possible. Do you have the numbers for the needle bearing and seal?

All right, I will prepare the drawing for you. As for part numbers, go to Andover Norton, select model Slimline (Dominator), click the pane covering the contact breaker housing. You will find part numbers and corresponding prices there.
